I was at a gunshow once and there was an older guy there and he said he used to shoot deer with a 22 mag. He just said you had to shoot them in the head. Im sure a 22 will kill a coyote if you hit it in the head. And with groundhogs im pretty sure it will kill them.

Oh My!!!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

You have alot to learn young fellow.

Listen to what the guys on here are telling you.
Don't get defensive, just listen and I'm sure they'll try to help.
Please don't shoot any Coyotes with a 22LR.

Good Luck

Don't put too much faith in what one guy tells you at a gun show.

We here at Predator Masters hunt the hunter because it's a challenge, but we also give respect to the animal we hunt and kill. You should listen to the pros here and learn from them.

I watched a Game agent shoot a deer in the head 10 times with a 22 rifle, not a pistol, before it finally expired. He was standing over it and was called out to dispatch the animal after someone had shot it after dark. Funny thing too, it had already been shot once in the head with a larger caliber rifle but was still alive.

Just yesterday I watched a female coyote and 3 pups running around hunting in my back yard. She was teaching them to hunt, my wife and I watched them for about an hour. I had no concern and had no desire to just go shoot one just because I could. I gave them the time and room they need to learn and grow. The challenge will come later when I go to call them in to make the kill, but I'll be doing it with a 243 or a 25-06.

You do have lots to learn /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif it's really too bad that you will be out there shooting and wounding coyotes /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

I wasnt getting defensive but theres a guy that just shot a groundhog with a charger that opened a thread.

FalFire gave you some good advice. Others will be along to help out soon. Listen to them.

We don't have Ground Hogs up here, but we do have smaller Rock Chucks. I watched my pardner shoot a medium sized one with a 22LR shooting MiniMags. It died but not right away. He shot it inthe chest at about 30yrds. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Years ago I shot a Doe in the head with a 22/250. It got up and ran about 100yrds. We found it leaning up against a tree with half of it's head blown off.
I wasn't very proud of myself at that time. I still think back about that scene and wince.

As far as shooting Coyotes with a Rimfire?? It can be done, but as long as the regs don't mandate it, why take a chance?
And even then, most opt for a 22WMR or even the 17HMR, but that's a whole different issue that been worn out on here. Just do a search. But 99% do agree that the 22LR simply isn't a Coyote round.

Save up your money and get that 204 you originally wanted.
You'll be glad you did.
Sometimes Cabelas and others have bulk 204 ammo on sale, that is very affordable.

There's a difference between using whatever happens to be with you at the time, and going hunting with a gun that's not suited to you're after.
