Weatherby Vanguard 2

I've always been envious of shooters who boast of clover leafs at 100 yards. I consider myself to be a pretty good shot, but dime size three shot groups always seemed to evade me. I picked up a used Weatherby Vanguard 2, 22-250, topped with an old Redfield 6 X 18 Accu-range scope. We took it out and sighted it in this last weekend. At 100 yards, I thought the first group looked pretty good. Darn, the second group looked even better. The third group was very tight, and the fourth and last group was that dime sized clover leaf I often sought and could never achieve. When Weatherby says they guarantee .999 MOA or less at 100 yards with quality ammo, they're not kidding. The ammo was Winchester 55gr VarmintX. I'll be out again this weekend to verify everything, and doubt I'll be disappointed.

Oh yeah! Those Vangard/Howa rifles can be real shooters. Was just out yesterday with hunting buddy and as usual was watching him send 400 yard ground squirrels running for their lives.

I bet some handloads would really bring out the best in that rifle.

Good rifle/good scope = good times. Always.

I just bought an S2 stainless in 257. Haven't worked up handloads yet but factory loads shoot 3/4" 3 shot groups.

Next purchase is going to be an S2 Accuguard

Got the same rifle, love the Vanguard S2 in .257 Wby mag! How do you like the trigger? Mine is decent, but going to have a gunsmith friend of mine tweak/lower it a little. I hear 2.5 lbs. is about the lowest you can safely go. It's a decent trigger, but not as nice as my M70s he's done for me, nor my factory Tikka T3 trigger...

The Vanguard S2 trigger is definitely an upgrade from the original but I will admit isn't as nice as my T3 triggers. I did get mine adjusted it down to 2.75 lbs and I can live with it for now.

I absolutely love the 257 Weatherby caliber and wished I had gotten one many years sooner.

DW, good thread. I just picked up a new in the box weatherby vanguard s2 7mm-08 today.Traded my like new tc venture 06 . Cant wait to get it out .Have a box of hornady 139gr interlocks.

I have a Smith 1500 in .243 which is the same design as the Vanguard and it's a shooter, very nice rifle. I am getting a 700 25-06 soon but next gun after that I think I'll go for a Vanguard 7mm-08, MI varminter. Would be good for a little heavier caliber for elk and such and to handload for some rec target shooting. I like what they offer in that price bracket. To the OP glad your rifle is working well.

Good shooting!

My Vanguards and 1500's have always shot very well for me. One of my favorite actions. Little bulky, but very smooth and reliable.
