Weatherby Vanguard Varmint Special?

I am looking to buy a 223. I live off a teacher's salary with two kids so I am paying off my next rifle with some side jobs shingling houses. I currently shoot a 243 and am looking for something a little smaller, cheaper to shoot, and that won't break the bank.

I saw this rifle the other day, and really liked the feel of it. All I have ever owned in the past is Rugers. What do you guys know of this gun?
 
I really like the vanguard action, however if the gun is much over 1k I still stand by my feeling just have a custom built instead. I really like rugers too, you might also look at what howa has to offer, its the same action without the bolt flutes which I actually like not having, it may be cheaper too

I had one and just sold it. It was very accurate, and I had the .223 package gun with the Bushnell Banner 3X9. I liked it very much, but got 'black rifle syndrome' and used the money to fund my AR project.

My boss and calling partner bought it, and he is very happy with it!

There's a fine line here.....

It's kinda like buying a house. One school of thought says buy more than you need, another says buy with caution so your home doesn't become a liability instead of an asset. I want my gun purchases to be an asset. It's tough to enjoy a firearm that you feel guilty about every time you see it because you know you shouldn't have spent more money than was practical for your budget/income. Make a purchase that you will feel free to enjoy for years to come, not a liability that comes with a guilt trip.
 
Stevens 200 - The definition of value. I have one and with some light trigger work I did myself, it is one of the best shooters I have in the closet. Retails for about $275.

The Vanguard is a good rifle for the price they are made by Howa who has in the past made rifles for not only weatherby but for such names as Browning and Winchester as well. Howa makes many high end rifles and the wetherby gets you a good rifle at an affordable price. I am not and have never been the type to be brand driven I find what I like/want and buy it, if I have to save up to do it then that is what I do and I do not feel guilty about it since I alwaysmake sure the family has what they need first. But I have needs / wants as well.
 
They are well made and good value only thing they normally need is the trigger adjusted and maybe a bed and float if you fire heaps of rounds through it.I also have a Weatherby 243 sporter and got free leupold rings and uncle mike swivels with it.The stevens 200 Short Action is sensable and also excellent value and is already free floated.
