Weaver V3, K2.5 or K4. Any comments?

I want to put a low power scope on my AR carbine to use while coyote hunting. I've decide on a Weaver low power scope because of a good FOV for a running shot if I need to and the lower powers are brighter. Plus the Weaver scopes are in my price range.
There could shots out to 200 yards depending where I hunt.

Will the 1X-3X, 2.5X or the 4X be enough for those 200 yard shots?

If you have a low power Weaver how do you like it?

Thanks

I have had 2 weaver K4's and they were good scopes for the money paid. Resale was not as good. Have had 6 or 7 other Weaver scopes without a single problem. Good Luck

Then old steel tube El Paso Weavers are a hot commodity, especially the 3X long tube model. They are rugged as hell with decent glass and a great tracking system for POA adjustments. The Micro-Trac is pretty darned good for repeatibility. I really can't comment of the newest ones except for the Grand Slam scope and I have been impressed with the glass. However, those Grand Slam scopes are bulky IMHO. I'd rate them as a good buy for the dollar.

Thanks guys.
I've read some good Weaver reviews on other forums too. I'm leaning toward the V 1X-3X. If it doesn't work out on my AR I can always mount it on my muzzleloader. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I'm quite partial to the Weavers, I have a couple V-3' one K-4 a VR-7 and a GS-4x in the new models and a double handfull of old K-1.5 thru K-3 and have never had a problem.

Here's a V-3 on my 25-204.

Thanks AWS. Nice, heavy, wide rack! He's a bruiser! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

What maximum range do you feel comfortable using the V3?
What do you like most about it?

I call preds and still hunt deer so I haven't taken a shot at game over 200 yds in 20 yrs. I routinely shoot these scopes at 300 yds at the range and have no problems shooting groups that are just slightly larger than much higher power scopes.

I would guess that as long as the crosshairs don't completely obscure the intended target it would be shootable with a V-3. Or if you can clearly see the intended target with the naked eye you could shoot it with a V-3.

At 300 yds I have a hard time seeing a one inch square with the naked eye but can see it just fine at 3x and put 5 shots in a 3"-4" group around it.

I have moved the V-3's to dedicated big game rifles (Rem 721 35 Whelen and Rem 760 35 Rem) and have gone to a Leupold 1x4x20mm scope for more laditude on eye position on my calling guns. I like to experiment with different equip so I'm changing things even if something is working well.

What I like about the V-3 is the great field of view, the quality of the optics and and tuffness for the price ( the Whelen tore apart a Leupold 1x4)

Check eBinocular.com for great prices on Weavers.

Thanks a lot. That answered my questions perfectly.
Sometimes it's hard to get a straight answer.
I'll check the prices on ebinoculars.
Natchez has the V3 for 139.

I once had a K-3 Weaver scope that was probably 20 years old when I got it. It started fogging up and I wrote to the company to see if they would repair it. They sent me a brand new one for free. Nothing bad to say about Weaver here.....

Blueduck that was the old Elpaso Weaver Co. The new Weaver(owned by Meade)is a little tougher on warrenty work from what I hear, I've haven't had any problems with my new Weavers and I have seven of them from V-3 to KT-15.

There is a company in Elpaso that does repair work on the old Weavers an ex-employee that bought out all the parts when Weaver closed their doors there. He does great work on the old steel tube Weavers and is quite reasonable.

While deer hunting all last week I set my 3X9 scope on 3X and left it there just to see how the targets looked using that lower power. I scoped a lot of deer at distances anywhere from 20 yards out to 250 yards. All of the deer I looked at at those distances were small, young deer and I didn't feel under scoped at all. Matter of fact, it seemed as though I held steadier.
( No fawns or monster bucks were harmed or killed during this experiment /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif)

This rough experiment convinced me to try the
Weaver V3- 1X3. I broke down and ordered one today from Natchez. As I said earlier if it doesn't work for me on the AR I can always mount it on my muzzleloader and may do that anyway during the season.
Hopefully it'll be here by early next week.

From rough field shooting positions I really don't care for anything over about 6X, even at fairly long ranges. My wobbles are magnified too much... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
