Weaver vs. Burris

Need some opinions. Weaver Classic Extreme 2.5-10X50 vs. Burris Fullfield II 4-14X42. Which one would you buy? Magnification is irrelavant as I already have considered both. I'm looking for quality opinions, toughness, glass quality, etc.

Thanks

I think the Burries FF II is 44 mm- but I can tell you a couple things about it- I like it because it is tough, very clear- stands up to abuse, not so high dollar, fits well to the rifle I mounted it on, has plenty of elevations and windage in the tactical turrents but they only stick up and out about 9/16 inch instaed of 2 inches like my Leupold, Bushnell, and NF tactical scopes. I just bought and tested a FFII Tactical and recommend it. I have had many burris'- and I like their waranty. Dislikes: made in philipinoland, both ends rotate when adjsuting so not flip up cap freindly, and I was a blonde one away from needing taller rings when mounting it on a Ruger MKII. But that combo 204 Ruger on a Ruger MKII and that Tactcal scope is as good as it gets for under 1K total. Just too dang bad it is made in flipoland. On the Weaver- they have good quality - especially for the cost, made in TX and have a great return and repair program if needed. But I have not played with that scope in particular- I need to buy a couple scopes in a week or so- so please let me know what you do and how you like it. thx stay center. jhg

The Burris FFII 4.5-14 has a 42mm adj. obj. not 44.
I like mine very much. Okay it's no longer made in the USA for the very same reasons many things aren't made in the USA anymore which is usually Labor cost related. However, I'd take Filipino craftmanship over Chinese labor camps any day. Filipinos do quality work and take much pride in doing so. Are they perfect? .... nobody is. People tend to forget that the Philippines almost became a state in the USA. Our relationship to that country is still one of significant strategic/economic interest even though our military presence there has lessened over the years. However, they are a strong democratic country. Okay enough of that...I just respect the country and our relationship with them.

Back to the scopes....Weaver, especially the one mentioned is a great choice also. The lower magnification has it's advantages over the Burris 4.5-14 and the 10 power is plenty enough for most situations a predator/varmit hunter will be in.

Either one will do...as long as it fits your needs.

I think the Weaver is a 30mm tube (the one I have is, but it is illuminated), and will be much heavier than the FFII.

I have both and prefer the FFII.

The Weaver can be bought from Natchez with the illuminated reticle for less than $300.

I have the Weaver mounted on a CZ 452 and love it. the 30mm tube lets in a lot of light. I was shooting it today and was also shooting my 25-06 that has a Leupold VxIII 6.5-20 and I liked the Weaver better except when bench shooting 200yds. The higher magnification really helps when using a bench. I got my Weaver from Natchez for less than 300 as has been said.

I've got a couple of 60 yr old Weaver's, they used to be mounted on 30-06 rifles. They are now mounted on .22's but still are working great. Even after that long of time they don't fog up, amazing. I've got a couple of Burris scopes and like them also. Nothing bad to say about either.

Between the two, I would choose the Weaver.

I have had too many issues with Burris scopes not tracking properly. Not the case with Weaver. Plus the glass in the Weaver Classic Extreme is really something that needs to be seen to be appreciated.

Afraid not!
The size of the scope tube has nothing to do with the amount of light.

Jack

Amen.

Agreed. At one point we broke like 3 Burris scopes inside of a year. The 1/4 moa turrets were closer to 3/8" on the Asian 4.5-14x42 model. The last Burris scope that I owned, (a 4.5-14x42 BP that was USA made and tracked right), was sold to Randy Reeves(Ragn Cajn) and I haven't owned one since. I have subjected numerous Weaver scopes to much more abuse that are still ticking. I have one Weaver with a smashed ocular bell and another with a bent tube that still work and NEVER lost zero........

is this so?....hadn't heard that....would be swell if they set up business again in El Paso....would like to get my K4's and K6 nitrogen filled....

Weaver used to be in Texas, but when Weaver sold out, years ago, they are not anymore.

As with all things change happened. Probably for the better.
While the old steel tube Weavers were great optics of their time, they needed to keep up.

ATK now owns Weaver Optics. They are a great company. You may know some of their brands....Weaver, Federal Premium, RCBS, CCI...the list goes on.

They have some good scopes & binos too.

I think down the road we are going to be in trouble, one company buying up others, like rem, marlin,h&r,bushmaster, and atk, with all theirs, what happens when their profits dont match expectations? Maybe we should stay with Burris and Leupold regardless of where they are made. ed

I like Burris scopes myself, I must be one of the lucky ones because I haven't had to send one back yet. I purchase their cheaper Fullfield line and they are still a nice bright scope that tracks well, I've got a few of them and they all seem pretty good.

Then again I'm not exactly brand loyal either, I've got Leupold, Bushnell Elites, Sightron, Millet, Mueller, Eotech, Tasco, Burris, and I even had a Nikon. On a side note the Nikon was the only scope I ever disliked I always heard how bright they were and what a great value they were but I picked up a 2-7 Prostaff that didn't seem to let any light in

I think with imported products it's all luck of the draw, 100's of users get a great product and then 1 guy gets a junker like I did

Ed,though the scopes aren't made here there are Americans working at Weaver,Sightron,Bushnell,Nikon,Shepherd,Swift,etc...no other country has a market like us....i share ur concern with many amer companies being held by a single investment company...it's a 2 edged sword.
Barry,i didn't think weaver was back in el paso but one can always hope....oops,i mean "dream"....scratch the hope word...

I have both scopes mentioned and after only one outing with the weaver (sight in day) I'd rate it optically better and more comparable to burris signature series.

Chapped Lips: Iron Sight, Inc.,4814 S Elwood, Tulsa, OK, 74107 repairs old Weaver scopes. Their email and website is scopeservice@tulsacoxmail or www.ironsightinc.com. Phone #918-445-2001. I sent 2 K2.5's in for repair and to change one of the reticules. Great work but it took about 7 months turnaround.

I have a burris FFII Tac-30 and the weaver you mentioned, and the weaver is much clearer then the burris. They are both good scopes and have no complaint on either, I just really like the clarity of the weaver better. Plus I do like the lighted reticle. It does not light the whole reticle, just a tiny dot in the center, which is more then enough. The weaver is going to be a little heavier (I think), but a few ounces really doesn't make that much difference...well for me it doesn't.
