Weekend waterfowl

A buddy and I made it out for some duck hunting this weekend. Yesterday we hit the big water and rustled up a good variety, taking six species - mallard, widgeon, green-winged teal, shoveler, redhead, and pintail.

I got my first pintail.

And a real nice mallard drake.

I didn't get my first redhead, but one did hit the water.

Here's the haul, along with the trusty pooch that fetched most of them.

This morning we just threw a few decoys out in a pothole on the river for a quick duck hunt before heading out after these guys.

There's not an open season for everyone, but my buddy drew a special tag for the limited two-day season.

Right off the bat I dropped these two wood ducks with one shot.

Later we talked a small flock of mallards into joining our little party and knocked down the only obvious greenhead in the bunch.

From there, it was off to look for cranes in a huntable location. Unfortunately, we were not able to find any before we had to call it a day. While searching though, we kicked a few bunnies out of the brush along the river and I added this little guy to the pot. It's been a long time since I busted bunnies with a shotgun. I may have to go again soon with the kids! It was a hoot.

I have not hunted ducks since I was a kid.. I would be considering taking that wood duck to the taxidermist.. Well round group of fowl..

Funny you'd say that, I'm considering that very thing. Interestingly, just a few weeks ago I shot another drake wood duck, so I now have a threesome. It'll be expensive, but I'm considering it...

I went to a club in Los Banos yesterday. It was tough hunting but I managed a couple Green Wing Teal, a hen Sprig and a Ruddy Duck... Had fun.

Those Pintails are my favorite duck. I'm not a waterfowl hunter but have always thought the pintail was a graceful and classy looking duck. Great pictures!
