Just curious what everyone feeds their dog? I've got a pretty athletic catahoula mix but is skinny as a rail. Shoulda named him slim. Is there anything I can feed him to help generate a little lean muscle mass. He varies between 53 and 57 lbs. Thanks!

DH,

Let me see if I can help you out. I have had the same problem with my dogs. They never stay the same weight LOL. now if you are looking for a great weight gainer, go to the store and get a few things. This mixture works great. Just do not feed it to them everyday because it will make them fat as a hog LOL. But it will put weight on him fast, Im talking a few days you will see a difference. This is what you need.

10 lbs of cheap hamburger meat
1 lg box Total (tm) cereal1
1 lg box uncooked oatmeal
15 oz jar of wheat germ
10 eggs
10 small pkgs knox unflavored geletin2
1 1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 1/4 cup unflavored molasses
pinch of salt

Pedialyte to drink

1. Mix all ingredients together in large (or larger) bowl.
2. Place in freezer bags, appox 1 lb per bag.
3. Place in freezer, thaw as needed.
4. Feed raw. Just pinch off the amount you want to feed and
roll into a ball. Place on top of regular food.
This recipe is good for putting weight on a dog. Be careful though, it will put weight on the dog in a matter of a few days. A lot of weight in a matter of a few weeks!

Hope this helps

Ok I'll check that out. He could stand bit of fat on him. Name is lee btw, that quote in my signature is by DH Lawrence.

I am sorry Lee, did not mean to get your name wrong brother. I hope this works for ya buddy, I know it does wonders on my dogs.

Lol no big deal at all. Just figured I'd let ya know. I'll be sure and let ya know how it works out for him! Thanks again

Lee, it really depends on how active the dog is. If it is like my doberman, you will have to feed him some maybe every month or so or maybe even less. You just have to figure out what works for him. This mix is used a lot for show dogs. They will feed them the mix a couple of days before a show to make the coat shiny as well as put a few pounds on them. I use it mostly in the winter because my dogs tend to eat less. But I use it in the summer as well. So this may be something you want to keep around for when you need it, thats what I do.

As a matter of fact just give me a call when you get the chance, I can explain it a lot better over the phone.

Whats wrong with a skinny dog???

All kidding aside, they should be lean, if being used, they hunt harder, and are heathier, less joint problems.
If my dogs get alittle skinny, they get some meat scraps, along with the normal 27% protien/12% fat feed they get every day.Never had a dog starve to death.

That's what I say too. If you need a bigger dog buy one breed that way. I do add some meat scraps when I'm hunting them hard but, that just keeps them from looking like Eathiopians when the season is over. Pure matainance.

When I take my dogs to town or work people try to give me greif and tell me to feed my dog. I tell them they are athleats not labs that live on the couch

I have always heard anything over 27-28% protein is hard on a dogs Kidneys? Anyone ever have any issues or hear of this before?

Lee, did ya try it out? Just wanting to know if it has done any progress or not. Just let me know. I thought I missed your call but I was not sure. Feel free to give me a shout when you get around to it.

Been feeding deer, and hog carcasses for about 10 days strait, my dogs are getting fat. When deer hunting is done they will be back out huntin.

I've heard that protein can be hard on them.If he starts drinking more water than normal, keep a close eye on him.Ask your vet.It may cause urinary tract infection. Not sure,I think I read that somewhere.
