Today is the first day of Arizona's javalina season. So I was up bright and early to make the hour drive into the Game Management Unit that I drew a tag for. After scouting around for a few hours trying to cross paths with a little piggy, I became bored and busted out my FoxPro. Remembering that there is a sound called Javalina Demise I set up a little ambush and began playing the tune in hopes of turning my luck around.......
No such luck, about five minutes into J-Demise a coyote appears from a brushline and begins trotting from my right to left at about 150 yards away.
Being an opportunist, I held steady just in front of the coyote's path and as the dog passed through the crosshairs I sent the round.......
Big mistake, I should have led the dog a little more but it is too late the coyote is doing the yip-spins and pulling all of it's guts out as it disappears back into the brush.
"Great" I think as I take a quick picture with my phone of where I made contact on the predator and slowly begin navigating down the side of the cliff into the valley. Finding the location of the shot was not very hard considering there was blood and guts everywhere. So I painstakingly begin following the blood trail for about a quarter of a mile and come upon some movement in the brush!!
The coyote jumps to life and begins a full-on run across the same road that my truck is parked on, crosses the road about 25 feet in front of my truck and then goes into another wash that is running next to the road.
Only to collapse about another 200 yards later while crossing flat desert.....
Looks like I will have to try my hand again at javalina hunting tomorrow.
