Well I'll be derned

I've been trying to figure out a way to call 'coons during the day time for a long time. I've had marginal luck at dawn and dusk with a variety of sounds from coon fights to coon puppies to bunnies to birds to....

Anyway, after reading Minaska Outdoors reports on calling coons during the middle of the day, I decided I had to try. So, now I'm a proud new owner of one of their callers complete with the so-called magical "kit in distress" sound.

I went out with it within a few days of receiving it. I made a few stands during the day and didn't see a thing. Then I went out at night just trying to film some 'coon action with a spotlight. The only thing I called in was a red fox who was camera shy. Then, most of one day I went out and made several more stands. Nothing.

I figured I was doomed. Well, I went to lunch today in a county park. While sitting there reading the paper, I noticed a giant tree with hollows all over it. I got to thinking about the bandit sitting there in my back seat so I whipped it out and set it on top of the truck and turned on the kit in distress sounds. Let me tell you, that tree came alive with coons! There was three different holes that they came out of. Three came out of one hole, two came out of another and one came out of the last one. Six coons were racing around up in that tree! I was sitting there in my truck and they didn't come charging down that tree but they sure seemed like they wanted to! So, there I sat all smiles until I realized that I was in a county park where no hunting is allowed. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif But, I'll take my camera out there one of these next days and see if I can get them out again and get their pictures. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I'm guessing this is the way they should be hunted. No blind stands, only calling to likely places where they might be denning.

I'll keep you posted! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

How about going back to said tree and playing other sounds to see what reaction you get. Maybe some JS sounds, DK, FP, LM. What ever you can get your hands on. Im just currious as we dont have hardly any coons here and I have never called them. Just currious as to weather it is actually that specific sound or rather location that made the difference.

I think location has everything to do with calling coons. When we could night hunt, I called hills and never called in a coon. Move to the bottoms and they would crawl all over me. I don't think they will come as far to the calls as other predaotrs. Jimmie

Supposedly, coons are easy to call at night. When I lived in Maryland, where coons are thick, I never called the first one. Called most all other critters but nary a coon. I guess Maryland coons never got the message to respond to calls?

ttt, I want follow ups. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

Coons are terrible around here, and running snare lines gets boring. I've had zero luck calling coons.

Where are you from in Nebraska ?

North of Franklin.

Years ago my hunting partner and I have spent endless nights trying to call coons (night) with his compu-caller but we never had any luck. We where using the kit distress and coon-fight.
