I got bored sittin' on the computer doing nothing so I went out in our back field to hunt some rabbits. Since it was a long ways out to my "honey hole" I took the four wheeler. I drove past something on the way that caught my eye. Since we had lost a cat(don't know if he is dead or alive) a couple days before I wanted to make sure it was a rabbit. I moved a little bit and got the rabbit to stick its head farther out and I saw he was a rabbit so I took a shot off hand and hit him somewhere. He went around the bush and I followed him and finished him off. Rabbit#1. I went into a different field and saw a couple so I hop off the four wheeler and sneak around for a look. I see one so I take another off hand shot and I am pretty sure I hit him, I follow him around and take another shot. Miss. He runs and I shoot again and hit him in the hiney. He runs hides in a bush.I throw a stick at him to try to flush him out, he doesn't move. Now I see a little opening around back where there was an opening and I thread a bullet through there. Rabbit#2. I drive a little ways and spot another one. I get into position and shoot. He stands up and falls over. Then he gets back up and flees around a bush and I follow him. He's dead.Rabbit#3. I drive some more, see some more, miss some more. Then I get to a little opening and 3 rabbits bust. One stops and I shoot. Rabbit#4. I drive down there and flush another one, he runs up a hill and stops.Rabbit#5. I pick them up and then drive around.I come up on another clearing where I see a rabbit on the edge of it and try to get around and see him. He busts and right then I see another rabbit hiding a little farther out, the other rabbit is going for him and I know it will scare him so I get setup as quick as I can and touch one off.Right when he starts to run. I drive up there and rabbits are everywhere! I probably saw 6 or more /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif One stops in the middle of the clearing and I shoot, Rabbit#6. I see another rabbit's head and chest sticking out.I get a rest on the four wheeler and shoot. Now both are flopping and I go up to the second one and it gets up and starts hopping off. I look around for him but I can't find him /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif I look inside of a huge sagebrush and then I see him in the middle the bush dead. Rabbit#7. I went to a different spot and was driving through some grease wood and I see one run.I go up there and see a different rabbit. I shoot, another one bites the dust. Rabbit#8. By now it is getting dark so I start to head back. I saw another rabbit going into a little patch of brush. He doesn't go out the other side so I know he is still in there when I drive up. Then I see him so I stop.He starts to run away. I slowly swing on him and taking my time.Bang. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gifRabbit#9. I head back to the house and on the way I see another bunny wabbit. I go to see if it is still there and I see a different wascaly wabbit. Bang. Rabbit#10.I am out of ammo so I head back to the house to get the camera. Here are the bunnies Weasel.(I lost two rabbits when I was leaving).

I've got a question? does anybody cook jackrabbit i'm from new mexico and not to many people cook the jackrabbits!! are they anygood to eat?

I don't eat them. I have never eaten rabbit actually(use them for bait). I think that my mom did when she was little when her dad killed them.I used to want to eat them(cottontails) but they are a protected species at our house and I have gotten over it. I have heard that jacks aren't any good. I don't know. Just rumors.

My old man used to tell me that his mom would make fried rabbit and rabbit stew all the time from jacks. He said you need to be more careful, and they're usually better when it's winter, but they're pretty good eating. I haven't had a chance to eat any, but I've had cottontail and enjoyed them immensely.

The Whitetailed Jack ain't too bad, very stringy. I only had it once, probably won't again. I would be very concerned about the vermin parasites that are embedded in their hides. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Cotton tails on the other hand are waaaaay good, just not a lot of meat on 'em. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

So would I. I never handle them myself, but I've seen quite a few fleas and ticks boil out of a dead one in cold weather. Rabbits can carry (host) Tularemia, plague, Powassan encephalitis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Since I'm not going to eat them, I don't pick them up.

Disease info

Bigbritz, here in Canada we are hunting cooton tail i tink...and yes the are really good to eat, don't throw away that good stuff, try that : cut in five part ( 4legs and the back part), cook at hi heat in a pan to brown them, then put in a plate on vegetable of your choice with a little red wine and let it cook slowly in the oven. Wen cook enough, reserve the meat, filter the juice in a pan and reduce it to make a sauce.....tell me about it with a bottle of wine....

P.S. if you don't kill enough, freeze them until you have a few to eat.

Evil lurker...yes rabbit carry somes dessaese and parasites, but they are good to eat. Tularemia is rare and was only declare in the mid 80's (here in canada i don't you for USA). And the found that the batteria is kill at 100% by a good cooking. So, the only way to contract this is if you have a wound when handling the rabbit. Always wear plastics gloves (like those for medical exam..) and be carefull with your knife.

P.S. By the way every game carry theires own parasites and infection, even deer, ducks and...always eat a fully cook meat and you'll be o.k.
