Anybody now of any good public land hunting or of a reasonably priced private guide for pheasants in the West?

I am in Phoenix, AZ and know I could go to a "game farm" but they get very expensive for a one day hunt! So, I'm looking for something around, Co,NM,Idaho,CA,NV, maybe MT or WY. Trying to stay within about 700 miles of PHX. if possible.

North East Colorado along the Platte river is about the only or best place in Colorado on Public lands. Most of it is private and you would need to purchase an extra walk in program pass to hunt these locations. You would have better luck at one of the local Colorado game farms and you might actually get to shoot a pheasant. Don't get me wrong....I've seen a few dozen in 26 years hunting them here, but ususally not during hunting season.

I would also try a local chapter of Pheasants Forever..they might be a help. Here is Colorado's list:

Here is Utah's list:

Here's California's List:

Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico do not have chapters as there are not supposed to be huntable numbers on public lands.

If I lived in Pheonix, I would go south and go quail hunting. Southern Arizona has some of the best quail hunting in the country.

Isn't South Dakota the pheasant capital of the world?
I'd check out S Dakota websites, even if they are a bit further away.
If your into bird hunting, you might look into chukars. Bigger than quail, Smaller than Pheasants

1500 mi. at 3.00$ per. gal. room and food $ out of state lic. $ and bring back 2 days limit of birds.. just how expensive are the game farms in your area?

But grandpa, It may only be 2 days limit on birds but it also includes a lifetime of memories. I'm just happy I can get into wild birds within a 2 hour or 3 hour drive. That way I can hunt a lot more. BTW, Isn't Mitchell, SD supposed to be the pheasant capital of the world???

i agree with you ! i just thought it was funny about the expence of the farm hunt!! memories is why i am going to wyoming for doe lope. i could buy alot of meat for what i will spend on this hunt but the memories will last a life time.. when it comes down to $$$ i guess we all do what we love and worry about the $$ later! i hope he gets all the birds he wants and if not i know he will have a great time doing what he loves!

By far, the best pheasant hunting I've ever run across was in the Central Valley in CA. when I was a kid in the 60s. Between Kettleman City, Coalinga, and Lemoore there are some big (really big) corporate farms and not much of anything else.

I haven't hunted there in 40 years, but I drive through occasionally on hwys 198 and 41 and just about always see numerous pheasant.

I live in Wyo and when I hunt Pheasants in Wyo I drive 725 miles round trip. this year I have a chance to go to OKlahoma. a little farther. But more birds....... Jc............

Southwest Kansas has wonderful pheasant hunting and has thousands upon thousands of public acres to hunt. The public stuff is just as good as any private land for pheasant.

Oshgosh Nebraska, there is a wildlife mangement area there I can't remeber I was stationed in Fort Carson and we went to Nebraska Pheasent hunting and shot a lot of birds, but that was in 1972 or 3

Good public land pheasant hunting in the Rocky Mountain West, is largely a thing of the past, with some notable exceptions in ID, MT, and CO. I know in my home state of UT, the public lands are largely "shoulder to shoulder" hunting for the few birds remaining there. There are a few communities that still sell "trespass permits" for participating farms (which is usually most of them within the communities), but those sell out very fast and you have to know who to contact to get the permits. I am fortunate enough to have access to a very productive piece of land in Northern Utah, but used to try the community hunts and public lands in recent years. My suggestion, basedo ff that experience would be to 1. Save your $ and go to a game farm or the midwest, or 2. Learn to love the desert instead of farmlands and go after quail and chukar.
