I was fortunate enough to be in the right spot at the right time to spot this buck. He was chasing some does as I was still hunting my way thru the woods Wednesday November 30th during our rifle season. The encounter lasted for what felt like 20 minutes while I tried everything I could to get a clear shot thru the thick brush. I finally got the shot I had been waiting for. When I shot it seemed like deer went every where. I tried to keep track of them the best I could as I quietly chambered another round. I actually heard what sounded like a deer piling up in some brush.
After everything settled down I went to look for sign. Unfortunately I was unable to find any sign to confirm I had connected. It started to get pretty dark so I decided to go home. I was completely disapointed in myself for possibly missing the biggest buck I had ever seen while hunting. I even convinced myself the noise I had heard was probably just deer crashing some brush as they were fleeing.
After a very long sleepless night I returned to the area. I made my way back to the same exact spot to reinact the shot. I was very pleased to discover I did not look in the right spot the night before. Between being so tore up having to watch that big boy for so long and the fact it got dark on me, I had completely lost my bearings in the thick brush. I quickly made my way to the right spot and soon found good blood in the snow. As I made my way down the steep slope I found my deer about 40 yards from where he was when I shot.
