West Virginia hunters...

I'm going home on leave this Fri. because of a death in the family. I'm going to try to do the night hunting thing. But I was reading the regs, and it said with a shotgun you could only use shot smaller than #4 or a .22 rimfire or smaller. I use 12 gauge 3" #4 buckshot here in MO, but I just think #4 shot is to small for a coyote. I know how everyone feels about the .17HMR, but I've got one of those too. Which gun should I take? Seems to me that WV needs to re-think that shot size reg. but nothing I can do about it. Thanks

I agree that WV needs to rethink the shot size. I think they need to rethink a lot of things, like shot size after dark, the rimfire only after dark, crossbows for deer, when turkey season is, etc.. Perhaps I am wrong, but it seems like they are hung up on "somebody could be poaching." If it were me, and this is just me, I would opt for the 17 or a 22 mag.

Here is a good place to ask legal questions regarding game regs. http://experts.wirefire.com/DNR/

Its something that they just started last year. I've got a spotlight that I am going to try to make a red lens cover for and try it. Think I'm going to take the 12 gauge for hunting during the day with the #4 buck, then use the .17 in case I go at night.

You might want to try #4 heavy shot. It's heavier than lead #4 and harder. You would need to patern your shotgun to find the right choke.

I'm heading to the hills and hunting in Jackson County,WV the week of February 20th and I hope a get chance with #4 shot. Me and ole pops going to try a tag team /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif. Bringem in close /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif. But, since these restrictions are for night time hunting, we will be using a 22-250 and .243 in the day time.

Yes, night hunting is rimfire only and 4-shot or smaller. Both are awful light for coyote but will take them at close range with precise hits. I hunt mostly mornings and evenings. The night hunting seems awful tough to sneak in and then harvest a coyote before it can catch your scent.(hard enough during the day) I think I have had more success educating them at night rather than killing them. I recently purchased the #4 Hevi-shot to give it a try. Anybody out there using this stuff? If so-what chokes have patterned well for you?

Anyone having any luck in West Virginia???? Been out alot haven't seen much sign or got any responce for anything other than grey fox. Was wondering if anyone else is having the same trouble.

I am currently on a 13 stand losing streak. Killed a coyote on my first stand of the year and have had 13 unproductive since. I have called in 4 coyotes but can't close the deal. They always get down-wind. It is near impossible to find the perfect set-up to take these things. I believe we call many more than we see. My last call finished with a dog winding me from about 100yds, I was 70 yds down-wind from the call! I haven't even done well on fox but I haven't been hunting at night. Wish you more luck than me.
