Western River MP3 sounds / Help

Hey Guys,

I need some tech help. I had downloaded most the sounds from the Western Rivers web site when I had windows 98. I recently updated to Windows XP Home, and now the windows media player won't play the sounds. It gives an error message stating it doesn't recognize format or codec?Anyone else have this problem and solve it?

Troy, what type of file are your sounds being saved as? In other words .wav or .mp3 etc> Try right clicking on the "download" button and select save target as from the drop down that appears from the right click. I too have XP home and pulled my hair out to figure this out. Hope this helps. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Wapiti6X6,
Thanks for the reply, Yeah they are saved in a MP3
format. I think it has something to do with the codec coding. I can play the sounds with realplayer, just not windows media player.

Under the tools tab, options and then file types, make sure MP3 sounds are able to be played (checked). I play MP3 on my windows media player with XP all the time. Hope this helps

Troy, Tw62T directed you to the options menu to make sure that those formats are checked, that should be all you need but sometimes when you download a sound from the net it saves it as a shared music file which requires you be connected to the net so your player can "borrow" it each time you request to play it and this type of file is actually just a saved path with a directory and not a file on your hard drive. By right clicking on the file or download buttons provided on the host site you can create a file saved to your machine in the format which is defaulted on your player. Hope this helps, took me a little bit to figure out why I couldn't get good files saved. Also, there are shared softwares out there (free) you can use to convert from one file type to another.
