I know there first Generation of e-callers were junk, I know, it took them replacing 5 before I got one that would work, but what about the Apache and the Night Stalker? I like being able to record my own sounds, and I think these are the only calls I can do that with. Any feedback would be appreciated.
 
Well I can't give a review yet BUT I ordered both the apache and the ranger pack (4 speaker amp) from Cabelas $199 for the apache and $9 for the ranger. That's about 50% off total. (299 + 100 normally) I figured for that much off and a 5 year warranty we'll see. Like you said you can record and download any mp3 or wav file to it's hd.

I've never used an e caller, and the only hit I've heard about this was it was not loud enough, and with the 15w ranger, that shouldn't be an issue. I should have mine in a few days.

Once I figure out what feq it's running (being a amature radio/ham guy) I can tweak the antenna to talk a few miles if I need to. Although I've never heard of any distance issues with them.
 
It will be interesting to see if that Ranger Pack will ACTUALLY work with a caller it was designed to be used with.

I had no luck getting the 4 speaker Ranger Pack to work with anything I tried it with. Opening up the pos and testing some crap inside didn't give me any indication as to why either.

I ordered it because it was damm cheap, and if nothing else I figured I might get 4 decent speakers, and maybe an amplifier out of the deal. The speakers did look identical to the ones FP and some other manufaturers use in their e-callers. But the 4 speakers in the Ranger Pack had been butchered up pretty severe to get them to fit in the Ranger Pack enclosure. I boxed the whole thing back up and returned it for a refund.

Please let us know if it does indeed work with the WR Apahce as it is supposed to.

Edit to add: IF it does work with the Apache caller I will be very surprised! No, shocked may be a better word. PLEASE let us know.

OK I finally got this and did some quick playing around with it.

It came preloaded with 400 calls, most sound very good, of course I'm only going by what I do with hand calls and the few electronics I've been around quite a while ago. There is a back-lite night glow green color on both the hand remote and the caller itself, very visible in the day.

The caller itself on high is loud, and I don't think the base was necessary, but hey it was cheap so what the heck. I walked around the corner about a 150 yards with a house and trees blocking line of sight of the main unit and no problems changing the call and I could hear the calls even with light city traffic in the background. It supposedly goes 250 yards but I didnt go that far. With the base on it was ear ringing loud on some calls up close. The call uses 8aa the base 16aa. I just used ever readys as that is what I happen to have but I'll change to rechargables later.
Its pretty solid

Now for the dumb:
The battery pack on the main unit didn't work, they had not crimped the + bracket rivet on tight enough, and the metal used in the rivet was not very metal conductive, so I soldered it and tightened the rivet. (it uses a 9v battery bracket) It says its "weather proof" but I can see water could get in through the battery door. (I'll seal it with foam)

The 9v connectors on the lower ranger unit are not long enough to "easily" get them plugged back in. Really stupid design. I'll be adding an extension of about 6" to the cord.

I can't wait to get out there and see what it brings in.

lol. That was one of the first things I noticed on the one I bought. I agree, really stupid! Has copper cost gone up that much? Geeze.

But it sounds like the 4 speaker box DOES work with the caller?

Well good luck with it and keep us posted after you get it out in some real world hunting conditions.

Yeah the 4 speaker box works great with the caller other than the wire fiasco. it has a patch cable that came with the caller that plugged right in. I may use it for geese or crow, but the unit itself is sufficient for anything else.

I pulled in a half dozen crow tonight! They seemed a bit POed by the crow calls :-D
 
I wonder why in the world that box won't work with an mp3, cassette or CD player. It had me baffled.

That patch cable they supplied, I'm guessing it's just a regular stereo cable and nothing special or unusual?
 
Yup same plug an Ipod uses only with no earbuds on one end of course. I'd put in the batteries in both battery packs and stick a multi meter on the 9v fittings, and see what it shows. I wouldnt be suprised if that was your malfunction. Like I said, one of mine didnt have the correct rivet in both the - and + side. A spot of solder inside each fixed that in a few seconds. (Shouldn't have to do that but...)

Or better yet just go to radio shack and buy it for $2

I think I will just give it a shot than. At that price, if I dont like it, I am not out much. Thanks for the info Omnivore
 
Bad electrical connections were not the problem on the one I had. I even bypassed the battery holders and connected a 12V SLA battery right to the circuit board.

Nothing I tried worked.
