I was wondering if anyone owns a savage 24 in 223/12ga and could give me their opinion on wether this would be a good predator gun.first,I would like to know what kind of accuracy the rifle barrel would give me at 100yds and 200yds.Second,what kind of optics could I mount I was thinking a red dot something between 1x to 4x magnification. If anyone knows of any combination guns that wouldn't cause me to sell my house to afford it I would like to hear about them also. This blue collar buckeye can't afford hans werfelhausers new drilling from deutschland.( I am waiting for my lottery numbers to come up so I can give him a call)

Porkypig,

Welcome to Predator Masters!

First of all, I have been considering this for some time myslef. In the South it is possible to have 6 sets with 3-4 in thick brush that best fits a shotgun and the rest in open fields or roads that present 2-300 yard shots. This seems like the perfect compromise.

Second, I have never heard of a savage that wasn't accurate. Kind of like convicting Al Capone on tax evasion, "It may not be sexy, but it has teeth" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If those lottery numbers do come up, how bout buying two and sending one to Mississippi so I can help you test the theory?

Good luck and let me know how it works out!

good solid gun from my experience handling them in the store. One of the things that I like about it is that the rifle barrel is on top, unlike the remmy combo gun that is out. Thats just my personal preference, but I'm finicky like that. also...it s a savage.

One thing I have to say, that WILL be my next gun, but mine in the .22 hornet, since my max shots are about 120 yrds. And I like the aspect of having one gun instead of two, it would be a lot easier. One downside, it's an extremely ugly gun, but hey, I hunt at night, so who cares. I'm just gonna camo it up too anyway. Also it should be a lot more quiet than the pump on a shotgun, or even a bolt on a rifle. It looks like a solid gun, go for it!!!

I have a Remington/Spartan, (made by Bakail). Chose it over the Savage because some people on here said the selector on the savage felt uncomfortable. The Spartan has two triggers. front is 12ga. rear is .223. The rifle is a tack driver. The 12 ga. P.O.I. is right on with the rifle, but I am still trying to find a shot/choke combo that will pattern. One other advantage, I.M.O. is there is an adjustment screw to tweak the two barrels if the point of impact isn't the same. Some guys on here said the Savage shotgun p.o.i. was way lower than the rifle. Just my 2cents worth.

I had one. The rifle barrel was very accurate. However, when I tried putting a scope on it, the scope mounts would not hold true when I shot the shotgun barrel. Usually wound up about 6 inches off when I shot the rifle barrel again. The scope WAS professionally mounted. Wound up sending it back in to Savage to have them correct the problem, but when I got it back, it had the same problem.

Not sure if they've corrected the cheesy mounting system or not. Did not and would not work for me. Seemed like the perfect gun for hunting up here In Wis.

I forgot to mention that I didn't trust the 11mm. scope rail on the Spartan, so I talked to Tech. at Bushnell and he didn't like it either, so I had it drilled and tapped for a weaver style base. Topped it with a Bushnell 3x9x40 with a long eye relief (4 inches)

I have the B-Square 11 mm dovetail rings on the SPR94 12/.30-06 and they have worked great. The shotgun is zeroed at 50 yards and the .30-06 is 1.5 inches high at 100 yards, direct from the factory.

The 12/.223 is another story. I send it back under warranty as the windage between the 12 ga and the .223 was 6 inches off at 50 yards.

I just saw the Remington/Spartan, (made by Bakail) at a local gun store and the people that worked there couldn't a test to the accuracy of the 223. I was going to start a post on this but, well here it is /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif. That was my question, how accurate is the 223? I believe I have seen in the past that the savage had a problem with the stock cracking. It is definately a sweet gun for covering both brush and open fields if the 223 barrel is capable of 200 yard accuracy.

Every gun is different, but I was very impressed with my 223. It is not as good as my Ruger .243, but it was never intended to be. I have shot .223 in semi-autos, bolts, and single shots and this Spartan is as good as any. I tried different ammo and it grouped them all well, different poi, but tight groups just the same.

I had a model 24C when I was a kid. It was .22 Mag on top, with a 20 gage underneath. It was very acurate and patterned well. The old man (80 years old) I hunt with has what you want, twelve gage on the bottom and .223 on top. The twelve patterns well, and for years ago, I watched him shoot the head off a turkey at 120 lazared yards with open sights! God, I wish I could shoot like him. Last deer season he was complaining that he tried to scope the thing, why I don't know, and coundn't hit his barn door from the inside with it. Never could figure out why, but he took the scope off and the open sights are stil dead on. He hunts turkeys, fox and coyotes with it, and wouldn't consider useing anything else.
Good luck,
John

I have a Savage Model 24, 223/12 gauge. I love it for brush, or hardwoods hunting. The 223 is accurate to about 150 yards, and the 12 gauge is good 40 to 50 yards with the modified choke. I use a red dot scope which works well for both barrels. I originally thought about a regular scope with see through rings, but went with the red dot instead.
I chose the 223 because the ammo is cheap, and you can find it anywhere. If I had it to do over I think I would get the 22 Hornet/12 Gauge. I wish I could find someone with a Hornet to trade with.

I have the savage 12/22 hornet combo,I like mine for nite hunting.Very light and simple. At 100 yrds the hornet will keep it under 1 in with winchester 46gr ammo.My savage dealer said they were unable to get the 12/223 combo, said savage was going to d/c the combo gun line.

jquinn, I think the Hornet combo is what I need too. Most of my shots are less than 100 yds., and the 223 does a lot of hide damage on the thin skinned critters like fox, and bobcat at that range. The 223 shoots 1/2" groups at 100 yds. I have an older Savage Model clip fed 340E in 22 Hornet with a Weaver 2.5 X 7.5 that I traded for at a gun show last fall that I really love to shoot (it shoots 1/4" groups at 100 yds,), but I don't like having to carry it, and a shotgun both at the same time. I didn't buy the Hornet until after I had already bought the 223/12, so I didn't realize how much better the Hornet was for my calling situations until after I had already bought the 223/12. I special ordered the 223/12, and when I did they had it, and the 22Hornet/12 for the same price. I already had several 223's, an AR15, Handi Rifle SB2, and a Pre ban Mini 14, so I had a lot of experience, and surplus ammo with that caliber. Thats why I purchased the 223/12. You know the saying "Hind sight is 20/20. Mine is in 99% condition, and has been shot very little. I know you said you really like yours, but if you are interested in trading please let me know, and maybe we could work something out. I have pictures. I also still have the original box, scope mount, and all the paperwork.
