what affordable 223??

I would need to look real hard at the Vanguard, it uses a Krieger barrel, granted it is not a match grade, but that is where I would start.
The Stevens because of the one in nine twist, if they are still offering it in the 223.

Now, if Marlin offers a 223 down the road, I would have to add that one to the list.

The Vanguard should be heavier too, do not know if that would make a difference?

The Weatherby Vanguard has a 1-12 twist. I struggled unsuccessfully to get mine to group. Gave it away.
The Tikka has a 1-8 twist barrel offering a broader range of bullet weight choice.

PIEEYED,, Good info, did not know the Tikka offered that twist..

That changes every thing....

I could live with the sucky expensive mags...

As I mentioned earlier, I have an 8" twist Tikka that is very accurate and will shoot up to 70 grain bullets.

But I also have a couple of 12" twist 223 rifles that shoot all bullets up through and including the 55 grain SP very accurately. If you want to shoot longer, heavier bullets, the Tikka offers some versatility. But I wouldn't worry about a 12" twist barrel for most 223 bullets.

The 8" twist barrel will cost you some velocity...

Now were getting down to the details. I'm a bit foggy on some of it but the early T3's I had were 1-12 for .223. Around 2006 they switched to 1-8 and stamped it on the barrel. I have both and a Sako 1-8.

where the heck are the cz guys?

The cz 527 is the best .223 for the dollar on the market. With the set trigger its a real tack driver.

I like the varmint model myself but if you really walk alot get the american.

Speaking for myself, I have a CZ527 American in .223. It jumps into my hand when I reach into the safe for something to go kill ground hogs with. It's a real tack driver with the 40g NBT and left all 20+ ground hogs I shot at with it last summer DRT, OSOK.

The single set trigger is outstanding, makes it easy to shoot accurately off sticks even standing, and pure offhand. Two of the ground hogs were taken at 67 and 69 yards standing off hand with it last summer.

Mine also happens to have a very pretty stock with lots of tiger stripe on it.

No way I'm going to camo paint over that.

I also have a CZ527 LUX Hornet that I'm very fond of.

OK, we've established I'm a huge CZ fan.

But prices on them have gone way up in the last couple of years. They are up to $650.00 + tax for one like my .223 American and $750 + tax for the ultralight camo that would make a great eastern calling rifle plus of course the check fees at my local rifle shop (a totally excellent place to do business). One can get a Stevens 200 + after market trigger + moderately priced scope + plus some cans of camo paint and be ready to go hunting with a good solid custom camo painted rifle for the price of the bare CZ. So when the word "affordable" was used, I had to recommend the Stevens because it puts one in the field complete for about $300.00 less than buying the CZ + scope, which seemed more "affordable" to me.

YMMV

Heh heh. I just bought me a CZ 527 American in .223 a few weeks ago at the last Boise gun show. And the seller had done exactly that- he had camo'd that fine walnut stock. I forgave him, because he sold me that gun with an American made Redfield scope on it for $365 walking. I happen to have an extra purty wood 527 stock at the ready to go on it if I choose to do so, but may as well let this one get the nicks and chips on it. It dont even really look that bad anyway. Oh, and it shoots just fine, thanks.
