What are you drinking?

For many years my wife and I have a drink together at 4 PM. We take time the sit and talk about our life and what's happening in the world for many years we enjoyed a nice smoky Scotch, since moving to the SW and having kids that send us the good stuff we've branched out to Irish Whiskey, dirty martinis and lately I've had a craving for Gin and tonic. I used to drink G&T when I was stationed in Taiwan, they are tasty when it is hot, 103 today.

So what drink do you enjoy?

I prefer middle to high end for my pocket (usually can't afford the real high end stuff) small batch bourbon. For a "daily" pour I've settled on Elijah Craig bourbon but have really been liking his Rye.
For more special occasions or once in a blue moon i have a small selection of single barrel, barrel sellect, cask strength bottles. Elija Craig, Knob Hill, Jack Daniel's. Most are above 120 proof.
I have a bottle of Basil Hayden 10 yr that was gifted to me by a friend that im saving till we meet again, alive or at one or the others funeral.
Also like a good Michters but a little on the higher end for a daily for me.
Pretty much anything made by Buffalo Trace is pretty good stuff although i haven't tried all of their line, especially the higher end stuff.

Really not much of anything for months, just the special occassion. Until last week I hadn't had anything stronger than a beer since Christmas & not many of those.

But I'm partial to small batch bourbons & higher end rums. Few weeks ago was thinking to get something for my 65th birthday & checked costco, found this rum that they've never had before & it had the death star, so it came home & sat in my gun room for a few weeks:

It's from Panama & I've never had one anything like it. Not my fave but it's pretty good. I'd buy it again I think

been on a bourbon kick the last couple years. still drink a fair amount of craft beer, but local guy has really been killing the store pick barrels and coming up with some really tasty stuff.

when i'm not drinkin store picks...big fan of

woodford reserve & woodford double oak
Traverse City whiskey company's Lakeside Peach bourbon
Weller Green label (or red when i can find a bottle)
Buffalo Trace

Craft beer guy as my go to generally. I’ve been dabbling with Bourbon for a couple years now. Nothing too high end. Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve and Woodford Double Oak for sure get their turns. Makers Mark as well. I have a neighbor that has been turning me on to a few nice Irish Whiskey choices lately.

Now that the weather is decent we sip a couple a night or two each week on the porch or deck and try to solve all the world’s problems. I figure we can’t do any worse than who’s running things these days.

Beer got me in a lot of trouble years ago, so I haven't had one in 30 plus years. Same for tekillya, and Jack danmya. Not surprisingly, I've stayed out of any trouble in this period of time. After all budweiser doesn't make you smarter, it makes you dumber. They should have called it buddumber, but than I probably would have drank even more.

Now the only drink I have is whiskey from time to time.
Snake River Stampede and Pendleton are the only Canadian whiskey's I drink.
I mostly like bourbons and find that the mid-shelf varieties are the ones I like the most.
Buffalo Trace
High West
Jim Beam
Rebel 100
and a couple others.
The only top-shelf bourbon I really like is Basil Hayden and Whistlepig PiggyBack.

Mostly just beer my friend makes. It's not home brew, he has a commercial brewery. I do get treated to special "not for the public" recipes though 🍺.

For whiskey, my tastes far outstrip my budget. So, mostly Woodford for me. I do love a really good single malt scotch, but they are just too pricey. Occasionally grab some Irish.

The last couple bottles of this, were gifted to me, I just can't stand the price. Do love the whiskey. The Montecristo has been price out for me too anymore as well. But dang, a Macallan 18 and a Montecristo, I'll probably dream about it tonight now.

If I'm feeling a little bit uptown, High West Rendezvous Rye and a My Father cigar are more than delightful. The My Father was also a much appreciated gift.

Mostly just Woodford though.

Coal roasted brook trout, some kind of dehydrated rice stuff, and some of that salty caramel whiskey. Had to carry it 6 miles and 3,000 feet up, but it was worth it.View attachment 30516

I'm what some call a "gram counter" for backpacking. I'm super weight conscious. Keep my base weight under 15 pounds. That's for pack, shelter, sleeping, cook stove, water treatment, clothes. Basically counting everything except food and water - and including the clothes I'm wearing. But I carry whiskey on every trip! And cigars. Most of my backpacking trips used to be in the 50 mile range. I'm getting old and weak though. Have been trying to keep them in the 30-40 mile range the last couple of years.

This was a typical 50-something miler from some years back. About 25 miles in, enjoying a whiskey and cigar.
