What are you drinking?

We raised a quarter of rye last year. I'd never tried rye whiskey before so on a lark a bought a bottle of midrange rye. It's now my favorite whiskey! Nothin' better than a glass of good rye and a good cigar in the evening!
 
There's a Monkey Shoulder rye that's really good. Our costco used to have it but I haven't seen it in a few years now
 
Elijah Craig rye is good. Michters rye is even better. Michthers single barrel, barrel strenth rye is supreme but out of my price range at over $200 if you could find one.

The closer you get to the sources, the more available and less expensive good whiskey seems to be (sometimes).
Vegas is just to far away and touristy to get good pricing.
Blantons is over $100 if you can find one. Yet i hear others paying $40 in the midwest.

just because you dont like makers dont discount wheated whiskey/bourbons. weller green label is a perfect example. or red label (107) if you can find it.

the green drinks well above its price point - at least if you can get it at the normal $30 a bottle and your spot isnt marking it up like they do around here... i bring it back from ohio when i'm down there for that reason. now if i was paying michigan marked up prices at $60 or more... no way in h#ll... its not worth all that. but it sure is some real smooth bourbon and makes a mean old fashioned.

I have cut way back on Bourbon and whiskey. Twice in my life I have stumbled into REALLY GREAT DEALS. Once in Wyoming got 2 fifths of some really good Tequila simply because the store couldn't seem to get rid of it.The cowboys didn't want it.
The other was a fifth of The Macallen 21yt old. $175.00
Because it was the most expensive thing in that place even after it's price had been reduced. I had to ask the man if he would please remove the heavy coat of dust, LMAO. I couldn't get my money out fast enough.
Talk about smooth. Drank it slow as to savor every bit.
Impressed a few skeptical friends when they ask what did you do for New Year's? My reply was I spent it with a 21 year old. LOL If they only knew.
 
One of my farmer / landowners lives about half the year in TN. He brings back some legit shine every year. It isn’t / wasn’t Popcorn Sutton, but I know all about that slow train! You can trust me on that one!

I have a qt of WV shine in my stash. I only break it out when I need a good sore throat fix or other cold remedy. My Indiana moonshiner died, lost that connection. I have some good shine stories. The best and smoothest I ever had was from Georgia and flavored with peaches. Scary stuff.

a buddy of mine has a source for Weller. He buys it by the case. That stuff is smooth as well and dangerous.

A friend of mine who is originally from Alabama goes to GA occasionally and brings back some peach flavored shine! I haven’t had it in a bunch of years, but remember it being on my most wanted list when he made the trips!

My sisters ex boyfriend is BIG into whisky. He has a dedicated room for his collection of over a 1000 bottles and he has the collection insured. Didn't know you could insure a consumable.
He told me we should get together for a tasting. I told him i was a consumer not a connoisseur.

thats unfortunate. green around here goes for 65-75, red for 125-150, blue (full proof) and black (12yr) are $250ish if you can even find one.


lucky for me i live a short hop out of toledo and have a couple stores i service there... so its a rare month that im not south of the border and able to at the very least pick up some green label and the occasional bottle of red, all at state minimum - 30/65 respectively. you gotta be there on allocation day to get the red though, or be at one of the stores deep in the hood to stumble on one that the local's havent scooped.

Have yet to see blues on the shelf - last time they got a release, the guy at Walt Churchills said they were waiting outside in a line when the store opened and they sold out in like 20 mins with a 1 bottle limit (all allocated in ohio is limit 1, not just one each brand... one of the allocated total, per day).

12 year (black) is only sold by lottery draw, to ohio residents only.
 
A lot of big stores here sell memberships and they are the only ones who can buy allocated bottles. Other just mark them up above secondary prices.
 
My dad had a brandy old-fashion almost every afternoon. For awhile I drank brandy martinis, then I found heavily flavored gin.

Did you know at one time Wisconsin consumed as much brandy as the rest of the states put together per year.

I keep a good bottle of brandy and four brandy glasses in the bar. I have a combination coffee and liquor bar in the kitchen.
