I've been thinking about taking some old "cow elk in heat" type spray with me to spray in the tree branches in my setups.... figured it would help as a cover scent.

What do the rest of ya use (if anything) as a cover scent????

Nothing. Play the wind its the only thing that will work. There is nothing that will cut your scent from a coyote's nose.

I like the Hoppes #9 thing Ma Bell. Your best bet, like most everyone else already said is to play the wind and just figure most of them are going to try and get down wind of you. Use that to your advantage. ,,,, Don't buy alot of stuff.

Hey platte river,

All joking aside, everyone's rifle has Hoppe's or some other solvent, or oil on it. If you don't think a coyote will pickup on this then you haven't spent much time around yotes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Ma Bell,,, Yeah I know ! Just that when you said it I thought, "yeah,, thats the most powerful aroma I use on my gun. Between that and oil and nicotine, caffine and the last coyote I shot,,, I can't hide from there nose. Gotta play the wind.

It is true i guess that all these scents are present when we hunt. In all seriousness though(yes I said seriousness), what I have done for the past ten years or so has really worked well. I wash my clothes in unscented soap and store them in a garbage bag with a few of the "fresh earth" scent wafers from hunter's specialties. I have never found the need for scent-lok, I have deer walk within a few feet of me using this system all the time. the good thing about "fresh earth" is that it works anywhere at any time.

red fox pee or skunk!! if after cat i use sardine in oil!!! old habits are hard to break!! don't know if it works but i have killed alot while using it!!2 film cans. on front bumper and two on back! sardine cans on top of rig and one on back bumper!! had a cat standing at bumper while we took a break for coffee!! lit him up when we got back to hunting!! good luck with ever you use!! grandpa fudge /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I have always been fond of using Copenhagen Long Cut as cover scent for my stands. I just spit it on the ground between my feet, and usually it brings me good luck!

tcman-i use either hs soaps or scentkiller. some guys i used to go to high school with started their own company called Xtreme scents, maybe you've heard of it. anyway , wash your stuff in unscented soap, shower/shampoo with it, and store your clothes in a bag with fresh earth wafers. when i take my clothes out of the bag it stinks up the whole house. my wife hates it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif ! It sure does work though.

I use a scent eliminator by Morsmans scents and lures out of Bolivar Ny. I also use his earth scent. It is great for coverup and works well for any type of hunting like deer or fox. The trouble is you can only get it in our area for now. It is sold in Coudersport PA and around the northern Pa border and southern NY border. I hope you will eventually have a chance to use it. He also has great deer scents and lures that have worked awesome for me. Good luck hunting!!!
