Just wondering what decoy you guys use. Right now I'm using a mojo outdoors "critter". It spins vigorously and looks really good? are there better ones out there, or do you guys even use decoys at all??
Thanks
charles

I recently got the Mojo fuzzy thang. Am having some issues with it and the jury is still out, but can't give it a thumbs up at this point. I did a poll here too before I bought and it sounds like I should have listened and gone with the critter. Lots of guys like it.

Before that I used a predator supreme and was very happy with the results I got with it. I finally wore it out and decided to go with something that has room for more than 1 battery. It came with a wooden stake and I replaced that with a steel one that has a heel driver on the bottom of it.

may just be how things have worked out, but it seems to me that my critter works better if I don't turn it on. If there is some wind that will make it move on its' own, then it seems to work better.

Decoy heart on spring on steel rod with heel driver. Went to sporting goods store and purchased a kids coon skin hat and sewed it to fit on the decoy heart. I spent $20. Works great and is easy to carry.

I just bought the whirling woodpecker. Tide some heavy fishing line around it's neck with a nut attached to the end of the fishing line.

Got that idea from Camopaint..Thanks George.

Thought hanging the decoy up in a joshua or a juniper would get it up off the ground, so incoming predators could see it at a distance. Only cause I hunt heavy cover.

I like it, has brought in several predators close enough for my shotgun to speak to them..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Mojo dove right now. Although we don't use it very often, but the flash can be seen from a LOOOOONG way off and it hypnotizes animals.

I'm a firm believer in the use of decoys and have used many, both commercial and home made. The best decoy is one that you don't leave in the truck.

I use a Mini-Supreme on almost ever stand I make. Seems to work really well, only problem I have with it is the on/off button is to easy to accidentally hit and turn it on while your traveling.

I use a JIB, and this year I will be adding a second decoy to put on it occasionally to give the coon/muskrat looking thing that came on it a break now and then. My hunting partner just got a whirling woodpecker as well, so we will give that a shot when we hunt together.

OK Guys
I see alot of you use a decoy but do you think they make a difference in helping to get more dogs in.
I would like to buy a JIB or Woodpecker but only if you guys say that they actualy help.
I would hate to carry more stuff in the woods for nothing.
Thanks

Well if I had to decide on what decoy to carry, set up time, effective use, all around use, price etc, it would be the woodpecker. Do I use a decoy on every stand, no.

Yes they work, will the coyote come if he sees the decoy, probably. He for sure will stop at whatever distance, long enough for the shot, hopefully.

I believe a decoy helps in focusing the critters attention on the area, making it come closer to investigate. But some I've called come running in so fast, it wouldn't matter what decoy I was using, they were coming no matter what.

Will you call 50 more coyotes this year if you use a decoy, no, but you might get the ones you call in to hang around a little longer so you can anchor them.

Just another tool in your bag of tricks is the best way to look at it. But do keep it simple and cheap. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

JITB here, with the original topper, also got a white/black rat topper. I am a firm believer that they do indeed work, I've seen a yote bolt from cover once he saw my JITB and was going full tilt for it

This is what I use.

It's an old ski pole with a bit of paint, camo parachute cord, fishing line and a turkey feather. It works well as a decoy. It makes a fair walking stick and is great for poking dead things. It has a pointed end which pushes into the ground fairly well if it's not frozen.

I don't believe a decoy will bring more coyotes in, but it draws their attention away from you. I also believe that a coyote expects to see some movement when they come in and a feather floating in the breeze will put them at ease a bit.

I am one that does believe you can up your success rate with a decoy. As stated, some Coyotes will come regardless what you do but the decoy seems to help with the reluctant dogs. I have had hangers that caught the movement of my decoy and then came in on a rope. Might be a terrain or region thing but the Coyotes I hunt seem to lose all caution when they detect movement along with the sound. I dont think it really matters what decoy you use as long as there is some movement. I prefer the JIB but I have seen some pretty simple and innovative ideas. I have a friend who takes tennis balls and he paints them one half black and one half white. It works best with an electronic call and from high ground. When they Coyote is looking in the direction of the sound he will launch a tennis ball down the hill and he swears it drives the coyotes nuts. Its all about the movement and planting the idea in their primitive brain there is a struggle going on. I honestly dont believe that a decoy would ever hurt your success.
