what decoy do you use?

OK Guys
I see alot of you use a decoy but do you think they make a difference in helping to get more dogs in.
I would like to buy a JIB or Woodpecker but only if you guys say that they actualy help.
I would hate to carry more stuff in the woods for nothing.
Thanks
Griz

They wont bring in more critters the call does that , they will divert the animals attention away from you giving you more freedom of movement ect.

When I bought my Foxpro last year I went out later that day. New to the system I hung the remote around my neck on a lanyard and placed the caller and my feather boa bunny out 50 yards or so. Shortly after I had a coyote come in about 20 yards to my left looking directly at my bunny and listening. Of course when I raised my gun (synthetic stocked) it bounced into the remote with a nice clunk (or bonk, you know the noise) and the coyote turned and looked right at (through) me. I was sure that she was gone, but her stare went immediately back to the bunny decoy. So I shot her.

I went out the next day (I had the remote in my pocket this time) and called in a double and both of them were locked in on the feather boa bunny and even after I shot the trailing male (he stopped at about 100 yards for a look), the female was disturbed but continued moving by and staring at that decoy. She was not moving toward it anymore but paralleling it, and staring at it.

These incidents made me feel good about my camo, decoy and Foxpro combo. I need to get out soon...

A couple of years back, I got to watch a coyote lock on to a Whirling Woodpecker, come to it on the run and then saw and heard him bite the decoy. It's one of those things that you see and don't forget. The coyote didn't get the decoy, but he is no longer with us. After seeing this, I went to a local chain store and picked up a couple of those lawn ornaments with the wings that spin in the wind. A quick visit to the local Radio Shack for some parts and after a bit of time, I had a bluejay decoy that did the same thing. As was mentioned earlier, a feather on a string works well too. GrizleyHunter,
I dont think what decoy you use really matters one little bit. Anything that gives the impression of a small critter flopping around and in distress will get the desired results. I really dont think the coyote cares. Its the reason that distress sounds of animals that dont even live in your area still work. You are triggering a response brought on by a survival instinct. Anything that struggles is a dinner bell for large predators. The key is the movement.

OK If I buy a woodpecker, can I still use my rabbit in distress calls or do I have to use bird calls.
So where can I purchase a woodpecker decoy?.
Thanks
Griz

I found the woodpecker on OutFoxed Products and left a message that I wanted to order one.
Can I still use my rabbit in distress calls or should I use bird calls.

You can use any distress calls that you like. The animals don't reason like we do.

Actually, they're smarter. lol

I use a deer hide that has been tanned, it is enough to distract them, I just place it over a small bush.

I tried a blue Buggs bunny that I got at Toys Are Us and a coyote ran off with it, reckon that I should not have put the rabbit urine on it.

I lost a white puppet that looked like a baby lamb, also.

I learned to tie down the small ones and have them in plain sight where the coyote can not sneak in and snag them.

This is what I use.

Pretty much exactly what I use, too, 'cept I have 3 feathers tied back to back. Even the smallest amount of wind gets it spinning.

Decoys are great but be prepared to shoot when one gets locked on to your decoy. Onece he get there he is gone. Sometimes when the see the decoy they ain't stopping until they get ther and when they do they usually grap a gear and get out of dodge. If you use a decoy it is a good idea to have a guy withingn shotgun range of it. Had coyote on two different stand last week in Nevada come in so hot to the decoy they didn't offer a good shot. When they got to the decoy they left even hotter. For the most part they are an asset to your stands but often times I just place the caller in a bush. The coyote is not suspiciaous as he couln't see the ditress rabbit even if there eas one. In open counrty they are a great asset as the coyotes, fox, o bobcats are looking for visual conformation and if it is open and they don't get it they will often get suspicious, hang up or circle in an effort to get the wind. Open counrty is where they shine with coyotes. Give me much brush or cover and I rarely use them for coyotes. When they are close enough to see my call they are usually in great peril.
