What do I need to get started trapping?

So far the only traps that I have been able to find are double spring #2's and #3's. Our supply is limited around here. I bought 3 #2's anyway. I want to trap bobcat primarily. I have absolutely no idea where to begin, or what all I need, but I am eager to start. Our season starts on December 1st. Any tips, or pictures of sets would be greatly appreciated.

Hey trophy,

Glad to hear that you are getting into trapping. I know there will be several others on the board that will help you get into trapping. I will give you my $.02 worth on somewhere to start.

I would start out and learn how to set a dirt hole set. There are several places on the internet that will show pics etc. Most of the cats i catch every year are on dirt hole sets. Remember that cats are not as scared of going into or under something to get to the bait as other varmints. A lot of times i use pieces of mesquite or rocks to make a "funnel" so the cat has to approach the bait from over the trap.

Small list of items you'll need.
Small bottle bobcat urine
1 or 2 small bottles of cat lure
2 or 3 good cat baits
There are several companies that make the above. Most make quality stuff. You will just have to try to see what combination works best for you. You will have to decide how much you need compared to how many sets you will have.

Tools you will need:
small shovel or trowel
hammer - for stakes (unless using drags)
gloves
3'x3' plastic piece of mat ($3 hardware store)
small sifter or screen wire
good pack box for all your stuff (toolbox)

I am sure that i have left something out but maybe someone else will fill you in on it. It would also be a good idea to find an experienced trapper in your area that would let you ride with him for a day. You will learn more than any of the books or videos will teach you.

txwhitetail,
Thanks for the tips and encouragement. I used to trap, and catch rattlesnakes with my Dad in west Texas when I was a kid growing up in Merkel. I still remember some things, but that was about 35 years ago, so I am real rusty at this stage of my life. I will try to locate a local trapper. That's good advice, and all advice is welcome.
Thanks,
