(What do you do for insurance?

I have my home owner's through West Bend, and I carry some extra insurance for my firearms, but it looks like this year they're going to be hiking that adder significantly.

I did the quick online quote from "collectinsure" (pm sponsor) and got a much better price for the same amount of coverage. Has anyone used them before? Would hope to never have to use it, but what's it like getting them to pay out if needed?

Anyone else have any other suggestions?

Thanks...

The best suggestion that I can think of is getting the best safe that you can afford. I got a good one, but I did not get a great one. If I had to buy me another one today I would get one with an electronic key pad and the highest fire rating out there.

You could easily have more money tied up in one gun or one scope even than a good safe might run you.

I agree, but I really don't have a place to put a safe in my house.

Basement is too damp, and I'm not sure my house can support a safe on the second floor. Actually, I have a nice safe available to me either free or very discounted through family, but it's so heavy (around 1,000 lbs) that I'm not comfortable putting it into my house. Additionally, I don't plan on being in this house longer than 5 years, so it'd be much more convienent/cheaper for me to buy insurance until I move.

Anyway... so back to the orginal post, what do you guys do for insurance (besides safes)...

NRA has it available thru a company they are associated with - works out to about $1.66 per $100 coverage as I recall last I looked. Both of my business insurance agents recommended I go straight there to get gun insurance.

And I'd recommend you reinforce that floor, and get a good safe, bolted down too. You, your family, and your refrigerator weigh more than that safe will with the guns in it. If the floors that weak, you might not get 5 years anyhow.

I have mine through my renters insurance. USAA, it for service members. I pay $12 a month for $10,000 of coverage on my firearms.

For a time, I had my gun cabinet as well as the guns in it stored in a UHaul unit. Sounds like it might not be a bad idea for you to put the safe in one of those as well as the less frequently used firearms. Of course, you could also put it in the basement with at least one dehumidifier in it.
Just a couple of suggestions.

I have my guns in a nice safe AND insured (through State Farm...pretty much all insurance companies will right policies for firearms). Insurance may get you some money if the worst happens but I'd rather not have to try and replace all my guns. As for room, my wife and I live in a small one-bedroom apartment while she finishes school and we MADE room for the safe.

I didn't think I had room for a safe either but now I have two. It is amazing how much room you can find if you need to. I also keep all of my important papers in it so it's not just for guns.

Just an FYI: Homeowner's insurance (or renter's ins) limits payout for loss (claim) of firearms due to THEFT to either $1500 or $2500 (depending on your policy). For fire, water, smoke damage, etc, you can use up to your Personal Property Coverage Limit (Coverage C on your policy)for firearms. The THEFT limit is applied to jewelry as well.

So if you have more than one decent gun and the Mrs. has some jewelry, your Homeowner's/Renter;s insurance will not offer much help if some scumbag steals it. Always buy supplemental coverage for firearm/jewelry theft..if you have a safe/security system, etc, the rates aren't bad..especially when compared to having to replace all your guns and the wife's engagement ring out of your own pocket..$1500-$2500 would only replace one rifle and some of my ammo stash...

And no, I don't sell insurance. I am an adjuster. Believe me when I tell you most people do not know how little standard HO policies pay for stolen guns/jewelry.
