What do you do with your 45-70?

Im trying to convince myself that I need one of the stainless/laminate Marlin 1895 GG. Problem is I dont honestly know what I would use it on. What do you guys use yours for besides bear defense which seems to be the most popular.

It is a hammer on whitetails with a 405 gr. bullet loaded to 1,800+ fps! Here is mine...

I wish mine was in the 1895, mine is a 24" Encore with peep sights. Awesome in the deer/hog woods with 405's, fun to shoot steel with, can be loaded from pop gun to HOLY **** levels. Trust me, you need one.

GC, nice looking rifle.

Any of the bigger calibers work great on hogs....

Shooting at hogs with a 45-70, a 375 H&H, or even a 458 Win Mag is great fun. Even if you miss they run like heII when the dust flies up under their belly.... It's as close as us "bunch of ignorant inbred toothless rednecks" here in the south will ever get to know what it's like to go on a real safari...

My favorite of the bunch is a modern replica Trapdoor Springfield carbine in 45-70. Big boom, lots of dirt and dust kicked up, and it makes pigs squeal really loud...

IMO, Marlin makes a nice lever rifle...

I have an older marlin leveraction. for hunting I use it on deer. works real good for that. but its just plain fun to shoot too. Have a 1' dia 1" thick steel plate at our range, most anything rings it, but when I shoot the 45/70, a good solid hit takes if off its mount. still fun, but more walking. rocks are fun to shoot with it too. I do take it bear hunting some, but have never shot one with it. Its one of those guns I would never sell.

i had one in a h&r handi rifle with a 18inch barrel with the hornady leverution ammo it would rock your world .shot two deer with it one was drtat about 60yrds and the other was a really good buck shot at about 100yrds it was shot a little far forward hit in the chest and it littery picked it up and knocked it backwards. loved it but it was a little much in that gun

I'm using mine on yotes, with federal fusion 300gr jacketed hollow points. When I pick up my long range gun, this will be carried with me as my "shotgun" for close range shots. Although, I still have yet to call in a coyote, so I haven't seen the damage it will do.

I have peep sights on it, no scope for me on this gun, I run the marlin classic 1895, as I wanted the bit longer barrel.

Wouldn't be a bad brush gun for deer, or a drive gun.

My current (5th) 45/70 is in a Ruger #1 with a low variable Leupold mounted. Would be hard to imagine a finer thick woods / dark timber firearm. Light, maneuverable and hits like Thor! Shot my best whitetail buck with mine, and last fall made a 200+ yard shot on a running coyote.

As said above. You can loadem light enough that you'll almost laugh when you shoot it, or load'em heavy and it will take anything in North America. I won't be parting with this one!!!

-BCB You sound like the kind of guy who would like useing the old black power load.

I love mine..... I probably use it more than most of my other rifles. I live in Wisconsin its a great deer gun and a real comfort as a back up gun for tracking bears. With the Hornady Lever action ammo its very accurate and I would not hesitate 100 yard shots.
Just my 2 cents

Have killed a couple does with my 1st year GG, but those ports hurt like heck when you're hunting without earpro! Think they've quit selling ported barrels and I need to get mine trimmed back to eliminate them.

Here lately, my youngest son has enjoyed plinking the 50 yard steel with 11 grains of Unique behind a 405 gr. HC. Bang-Pause-CLANG.

I like the idea of using at as backup, unfortuantely out here most shots on big game are 150+ with most being in the 200-300 range. there are a few places I hunt that are wooded but nothing super dense.

I'm think this will be a high desert gun where the brush get fairly tall and most shots will be 50-100 yards. Looks like this one with a pistol grip instead of straight grip.
