What do you do with your 45-70?

I have another bud that takes his GG PD shooting. If a PD is on a mound and he hits the dirt right under him he gets some fantastic aerials.

Well I have a Marlin 444S in 444Marlin which is in the same family as the 45-70. I like using it for deer in the thick woods here in Minnesota. It is also just a fun gun to shoot and it takes 4-5 days to get rid of the smile from my face after having it out shooting. Most of my friends have never seen a gun like that and after you pull the trigger the next thing I here is "What the F*** was that". If I could only have 2 guns it would have to be 22-250 and 444

My old Marlin 1894 .44mag is one of my favorite brush guns... I've been threatening to take it out for Coyotes, but am afraid they might out run it's capabilities...

She may not have some of the sophistication of some of the newer ladies, but I love to shoot it...

Sometimes I just feel like going retro......ditch the magnum scoped rifles and hunt traditional calibers with open sights like my grand dad. My .45/70 is a single shot Remington rolling block replica, looks like an old buffalo gun. Took a nice muley buck with it the past deer season. I don't know exactly how far away it was, but I know I had to hold about 2 feet over it's back to hit it.

BTW ColoradoOsprey, I'm searching for a cast bullet load for my .25-20 WCF, you don't have a reloading manual for cast bullets do you??

you dont need a reason, you just need one. my 1895 has taken numerous hogs, cows, and one elk. plus its nice to know that if a T-REX shows up at the door that I can teach him a lesson.

Thanks. That was a good day.

I have peep sights on it, no scope for me on this gun, I run the marlin classic 1895, as I wanted the bit longer barrel.

Wouldn't be a bad brush gun for deer, or a drive gun.

It will do serious damage. I'll get the pics up of the one I shot last fall in my very suburban back yard. I have the 1895 GG stainless with te laminated stock. LOVE IT. I shoot the lever revolution bullets out of it. I also have a truglo 2X red dot that it wears most of the time but is easily removed for the fiber optic sights.

My brother has a .450 Marlin, shot an oppossum with it at about 10 yards. Skinned it on the spot. I kid you not, the pelt was perfect. He shot it in the rear and 30 foot away the pelt landed clean as a whistle. You need this firearm to collect fur.

I don't believe in "overkill" however a solid hit with your ammo would certainly decisively terminate the yodel dog's existence! Don

I didn't read all the previous posts before responding but yours really made me laugh. That ugly possum didn't feel a thing! Don

I agree. I have used mine to take several whitetails and it has worked great. I am also shooting handloads with the 405gr and 1800+ fps. I have an 1895 and also a guide gun as well in the great 45-70. I do wanna get some ghost rings for the guide gun and try them out.

I have the Ashley/XS Ghost Ring Aperture on the rear with a Marbles 1/16” flat faced gold bead on the front. That rifle handles like a nice 20 gauge shotgun, very quick and responsive, yet plenty accurate enough for more precise shots at timber ranges. I added a 1” Decelerator Recoil Pad to help tame the recoil and it works great. It is a great rifle for ghosting through the timber on a damp grey November morning during big game season. I’ve smacked quite a few whitetails with my rifle and one day it’ll hammer one of our wild hogs here too. I have a Marlin M336C set up the same way, and while I love the little .30-30, the .45-70 comes out more often.

I practice up with a Marlin M39 .22LR with an aperture sight and bead set up identical to the two centerfires. That gives me inexpensive peep sight shooting practice and when using it for hunting tree squirrels it is super practical practice for bigger game with the centerfires. Not to mention plenty of fun all on its own. Great rigs, all of them!

I have 3 .45-70's: Guide Gun, 1895C cowboy rifle, and 1874 Shiloh Sharps, in addition to a .444 Outfitter and 1894 in .44 Magnum. Like was said, I just love shooting the same cartridge Custer used at Little Big Horn, and having the versatility to load it down to pedestrian cowboy load level, or to mid-range for most hunting, or up to rattle-your-teeth T-Rex loads. I have launched 405 Remmie's at over 1900 f.p.s., and that load is not for the faint of heart. Yes, it doesn't shoot like a laser, but the 'cool' factor is way high. And if you load it up with cast bullets for deer hunting, you can eat right up to the hole. Hard cast bullets will shoot through griz from stem to stern. My Guide Gun, like GC's, is tricked out with XS/Ashley Outdoor Ghost ring sights, although my .444 wears a Vari-X III 1.5x5. Get a Guide Gun, reload for it, and you'll be happy for the rest of your life!

I would seriously consider the 1895SBL, which comes already accessorized and tricked out in stainless steel, with a David R. Clay enlarged lever, full-length magazine tube, black and grey laminated pistol-grip stock, and scout scope mount. That's most of the mods people are putting on theirs, with the exception of the Wild West Guns Happy Trigger kit and Bearproof ejector. Marlin says it comes with a 'deluxe' recoil pad, but you might wanna consider either a Limbsaver or a Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad if the factory pad isn't satisfactory for you.

If you haven't already, you need to go loiter and prowl over at the marlinowners.com website and you will find a wealth of information.

Once you go Marlin big-bore, you never turn back!
