What do you hunt in the spring?

In east Texas we chase a few hogs and the occasional coyote if asked. Throw in a little fishing, a few beavers, coons, dillos and turkeys and we always have something to do. That is if you can stand the heat!

When it starts gettin warm out I rattlesnake hunt quite a bit and when its May and the baby PDs are out I start shootin them. But the main thing I love to hunt in the Spring is turkeys.Turkey season starts next Sunday so I can hardly wait. But when the turky arent very active we usually run into a few porcupines and armadillos to shoot. But probably one of the funnest things we do next to rattler huntin and prairie dog shootin is bowfishing. So to sum it all up I shoot varmints,gar/carp,and a turkey if Im lucky.I have got 2 turkeys since I started huntin them two seasons ago so hopefully I can keep up the streak of good luck I have had and get 3 for 3. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

So are your a fan of rattlesnaek hunting too NASA?I have been hunting rattlesnakes for a long time now.I started catching harmless snakes like hognoses, bullsnakes, racers, coachwhips, water snakes, and gartersnakes when I was about 7 years old.I started hunting rattlesnakes when I was 11 or 12 and have been doing it every spring since then. The town I live in is pretty small so Im kind of known for rattlesnake hunting around here so its pretty cool.I have seen three snakes so far since it has warmed up this year.I saw a 6 foot bullsnake two days ago and a rattlesnake about 4 foot yesterday.I wish we had big western diamondbacks around here but all we have are prairie rattlers. The average size is about 3 feet but I have killed a 48incher with 11 buttons and my uncle killed one 58inches long with 10.The biggest snake I have ever seen in the wild was an 81 inch bullsnake my cousin found at work last year but unfortunetly a guy that he works with hit it with a wrench and it died shortly after I got it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gifI was wondering though are there people that buy rattlesnake skins?I have about 15 that are just lying around and I need to do something with them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey OKrattler, Name a snake, any snake, and I have probably owned it at one time or another. The big ones that I haven't owned are the "Inland Thaipan" the "Black Mamba" and the "Tiger snake". I have had monacled cobra's,Texas coral snakes, countless rattlesnakes of different varieties, sri lanken tree vipers, a gaboon viper,Jameson's mamba, green anaconda, and my favorite one was a 9 foot malaysian king cobra named "Sweat Pea" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Oh, and I have had a couple sea crates too. You can handle them during the day but when the sun goes down they get aggressive(has something to do with there feeding schedule)

Holy cow Chupa you have owned a bunch of snakes and some deadly ones at that. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gifDid you ever own a bushmaster, puff adder, saw scaled viper, russels viper, eastern diamondback, timber rattler,or a sidewinder?I think gaboon vipers are some of the coolest lookin snakes ever and they got some long fangs on em too. What did you do with em and how in the heck did you feed that king cobra?Im gonna go out on a limb here and say you did it very carefully. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gifA 9 foot snake of any kind would be hard to handle so I cant imagine trying to keep a king cobra that size under control that must have been an exciting chore. That would defintely be something that I wouldnt want to get loose in the house. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Bushmaster-no
Puff Adder-yes
Saw scaled viper-yes
Russels viper-yes
Eastern DB-yes
Timber Rattler-no
Sidewinder-no

The Gaboon Viper was about 5 feet in length and had fangs the size of my pinky finger and it's head was as wide as my palm. Talk about camouflage..... in the leaf litter in it's vivarium it absolutely disappeared. The king cobra ate only other snakes, we once couldn't find a very big water snake to feed it so we sewed a few rats to the end of a small water snake in hopes it would eat the whole thing. It did, but it regirgitated(sp?) the rats /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. Out of all of the snakes I have owned only the Gaboon viper and the Sri Lanken Tree Vipers gave me the creeps. The Gaboon Viper just looked creepy and The Sri Lanken Tree Vipers have no anti-venom, so if you get bit you either tough it out or lose a lot of tissue.........or die. Oh and we sold them on Kingsnake dot com.

Those Gaboon vipers are some goofy lookin critters but they are really cool.I can see why anyone of them would give you the creeps especially that tree viper how come there aint no anti venom for them?I wouldnt think that any hospitals in the United States would carry foreign snake anti venom but I never really thought about it I guess.I think if I were keeping that many venomous snakes I would want to keep the ones that I knew they had anti venom for pretty close to home. The western diamondback in your area or prairie rattlers even wouldnt be as bad as gettin bit by that king cobra or something like that cause hospitals around there probably have rattler anti venom on hand all of the time. But the crazy thing is that last year a girl in my class and her mom were at home and her mom went out bare footed to get something off of the front porch and a 3 foot prairie rattler bit her on the foot. They drove her fifteen miles to the nearest hospital and they didnt even have anti venom to give her so they had to drive to another town 20 miles from there to get her some. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gifIt turns out the snake only scratched her foot and most of the venom got on the top of her foot.A little boy got bit a month or two before she did but he didnt just get scratched he picked up a baby rattler and it bit him twice. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gifBut they took him to a hopspital that could help him and hes doing fine.It seems in the past couple years the rattlers have gotten really thick around here.

When I was in Africa we went to a reptile house and they had around 100 different venomous snakes. The had a black mamba that was 12 feet long.
One of our trip leaders is a biologist that used to work a Krueger national park in South Africa and she told us this story. She was driving her land rover back to base one day when she sees a huge black snake zip across the road in front of her. Immediately she figured it was a black mamba and veered to the side of the road so she could get a picture. She reached back for her camera and when she turned back toward her window the mama struck the window inches from her face. It had buzzed up a tree on the side of the road and struck from there. If she would have had her window down, like she normally did, she would have been deader than dead with big honking fang holes all over her face and neck.
Pretty crazy.

The only reason we had the tree vipers was because they had a blue offspring at one time, and blue tree vipers are worth a fortune. They typically only come in two colors, green and orange. We had an orange male and two green females in hopes of getting a blue offspring, but it never happened. So we gave up and got rid of them fast /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif. I have never been bitten by a venomous snake, constrictors yes. Infact I was bitten by our green anaconda once and let me tell ya that hurts somethin fierce. But once I was handling a Texas coral snake we had just gotten in and I wanted to check out it's fangs(coral snakes have tiny fangs)cause I had never seen them up close. I had opened it's mouth and pulled back one of the fangs with a handling hook. When I did this a small drop of venom rolled out of the fang and down my index finger and across a hang nail I had. About 5 minutes later my lips went numb /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif and scared the crap out of me. But I just washed my hands real good and nothing else really happened so it must not have been to bad.

Most all of the bites by snakes that utilize a Hemotoxin can be treated with Crofab. And Crofab can be found everywhere, even in vets offices. Neurotoxins on the other hand are a bit dicier because they typically work too fast depending on the species of snake.

A blue snake would be something to see for sure.I bet those Anacondas do hurt when they bite they have hundreds of sharp teeth. But I cant imagine what a coral snake could do if it got a good dose of venom in ya if just a drop could cause a little discomfort. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gifI catch snakes quite a bit and I havent been bitten by a rattlesnake and I dont plan on it but some of the harmless snakes we have around here are downright mean. The meanest are the coachwhips or the brown water snakes we have. But I have been bit by a western hognose and those seem to hurt alot worse than any other ones for some reason. One bullsnake that bit me held on and didnt want to let go and that hurt a little.Last year I found some snakes I didnt even know we had around here.I found a Texas longnosed snake and a milk snake.I also found a couple of ringneck snakes and they were cool lookin little critters.Im kind of stealing this thread so I might start up a thread about snakes cause I just now thought about it and I feel really stupid. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gifSorry.
