i have a hound and a few half hound half lab pups the pups mother comes from a good line and thinkin of getting rid of the pups and gettin full breeds and need to know what dogs are best for treeing cats and bears the mother has treed 1 bear since ive been with her she isnt very good at tracking i dont think she was ever trained the bear she treed wasnt too far from us when she took off after it. this is my frist time becoming a hound hunter and i want to train my own dogs.

Hi Brandon, what part of WA state are you in? I live on the eastside near Cheney. You will get varying answers as we all have our opinions on which ones are the best. If I was you I would try and find a local cat and or bear hunterwho has some started hounds or some pups from proven big game hounds, even if they are not papered. Papers never seem to tree a bear or cat very good. I know MYK currently has some very good English pups needing a good hunting home. May I highly reccommend you get Tom Solberg's book, "Dog Talk" starting coonhounds and big game hounds. Awesome book, if you get it and read it and follow it, you will have an outstanding hound when your through, If you live on the eastside or are ever over this way you are more than welcome to tag along on a coon hunt if you want. I have two blueticks, very good noses and LOUD mouths, I have a redbone, great tracking hound and handles like a dream (be wary of redbone breeders, search out the good ones cause there are quite a few bad ones), and I have one Plott Hound pup who is going to be something special I believe. Good luck. Fred

i live in eastern washington also i live near fruitland about 30 miles from davenport id liek to tag along if i ever get that way this winter i might be gettin some wolves was wonderin since there natural predators would they be able to tree a cougar i dont plan on training them to do that but would they be able to be trained to do it.

brandon, you are getting real wolves, wow. i am just curious why and how did you come about getting them.

i dont think they would make good cat or bear dogs. i would think they would just want to kill and eat everything else too. good luck breaking them off of deer /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I have only hunted bear and cougar for three days in Washington state. My host advised me that it was not legal in that state to hunt bear with dogs anymore. Was he wrong?

Brandon, Wolves are too wild, even hybrids have enough wild in them to not be suitable for pets or hunting companions. I doubt it's possible, but would'nt even entertain the thought.

Hi Rich, your host was correct, it is against the law to chase bobcats, lions, and bears in WA state with hounds, however they do have a drawing which should be posted, hopefully tomorrow, for about 200 permits to track and tree 125 lions with hounds from 1 Dec to 15 Mar. These are done under the pretense of Public Safety Cougar removals. You have to sign an affidavit that the hounds are yours and they can tree cats. Here in WA you can also coon hunt, although we don't have a dense population of coons, actually the porky pines outnumber the coon 3 to 1. I run bobcats, bears and lions over in Idaho with my hounds.

Brandon, personnaly the wolf hybrids are beautiful animals but they are not very good pets and they wold never work as hounds They have no instincts to track and tree game and they would be constantly shot out in the woods, you know mistaken for coyotes. If you want to track and tree game get yourself a good hound my friend. I hunt near you alot on the Springdale Hunters Road for deer and turkeys, your more than welcome to come along on a coonhunt when it opens back up near the end of Nov. Talk to you later. Fred

i shouldve said b4 i liv on an indian reservation we can still hunt cats and bears with dogs and i didnt get the wolves they were hybrids and i didnt get them cuase of my kid my dad had one a hwile ago and it was a good pet good with children but it killed a lot of other dogs in the neighborhood in its one time of getting loose.

Machias and Brandon,
Thank you for clearing the air on the bear and cougar hunting with dogs thing. I just didn't want to see anyone get the wrong impression and get caught up in a legal issue.
