What exactly is a long shot.???

at the current i shoot a howa 1500 with bull barrell and a 1/12 twist i shoot 55 grain federals as this is what this gun likes. the funny thing is ,is that this was a cheap gun that required no accurizing out of the box. it shoots 3/8" groups at 100 yards and at 500 yards i can consistently keep nine out of ten in a four inch target dot of a benchrest.

You guys are good. I regularly miss shots at coyotes well inside of 200 yards. Sometimes I wonder if the little suckers are bullet proof!!

The long pokes are the ones I'll brag about. I shouldn't even mention the one I missed standing broadside at 28 yds., three I missed at 35 yds. (two were asleep), a dozen or so at misc. distances that don't even add up to 500 yds.

Dang, I here that. I truely believe sometimes that if you take most of my misses it wouldn't add up to some folks average shot. I missed one a couple of years ago at a lazered 32 yards that looked over at me to size me up after that shot didn't even run. Must have decided that straight in front of me was probably the safest spot in the desert that day. I think I am still blaming that one on mirage effect. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Yep, That's what I thought.

One large tree squirrel vs. my Gamo Hunter .177 pellet rifle.

long range = 15 yds. = certain death

beyond that it just [beeep] 'em off.

That ain't nothin, I missed a coyote at less than ten yards.Still haven't lived that one down, and no one saw it but me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif. Come to find out I must have banged my scope or something, it was hitting six inches high at 100 yards. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I missed one at 98yard standing and then hit him a 269yard running???? Its amazing how you can miss what you think is an easy shot and then turn around and make a hard shot.

I'd consider any shot where an elevation correction is needed to connect to be a "long shot". That correction being either a holdover via reticle or a dialed correction on the elevation knob.
For popular varmint calibers/loads & shooting prone, "long" starts between 275-350yds. For seated shooting off sticks, subtract 100yds...

Wind adds a whole nutha' dimension to the game too.

Thanks Yotestomper. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif 4 inch circle at 500 yeards 90% of the time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif wow that's pretty good shooting.

here in Ohio, anything over 200 yds would be considered long range to us, especially in Southern Ohio where the land gets a little more hilly and forested...

Most of my shots are under 75 yards.

This was a long shot for me! I did take this coyote in Wyoming in 2005. It was lasered at 330 yards, range was called by my guide, Scott (left). I was prone on a boulder, very steady, when I squeezed the trigger. I was using the rifle slung on my back here in the picture. Savage 110 (lefty) in .243, Bushnell elite 3200 10X W/mil-dot reticle. Remington 75gr Accu tip factory loads. Now don't laugh, but I use RCBS's reloading software external ballistics calculator to sight my mil-dot scopes in, utilizing optimum point blank range (OPBR) and mil-dot hold table, based on the sight in of the OPBR. I then use a data card and some memorization to best use the system. For this particular shot, I used a 300 yard zero for OPBR for this factory load and held 2/10 of a mil-dot low. You can see the exit hole on the coyote, not too fur friendly, though.

This picture also shows how I perform the "move" function of "shoot, move and communicate". I refuse to let my foot "challenge" keep me from hunting. I would rather break 'em huntin' than workin' any day! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Being an average shot or a little better then average ( pat on the back lol, ) I'd say 300 to 350 yards is a long way for most, unless your name is Quigley.
Where are the 400 and 500 yard night shots, I know they are out there. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

I am sure I have the world record for missing slam dunk shots, I have made a few good ones but am sure the calculations would show me in the minus!!!
I did get lucky a few times in front of people, so I got a few 'verifiable' stories. LOL
Genraly a 400 yard pdog aint safe, from a rest of course, I hesitate to shoot more than 300 on coyotes, I gotta have a real good sight picture before I'll touch her off at that range.
Hunting trophy or meat, I see no reason for that long shot, I did when younger, but now, I'll just wait for another chance or sneak up.
