What grain .223 will more effectively EXPLODE gophers/PDs?

I am looking at 45, 50 and 50 grain bullets. Same bullet, only difference is the grain. Will the slower 55 grain bullet cause more of an explosion when it hits the gopher or will the faster moving lighter 45 grainer?
I want the gophers to explode and jump 5 feet in the air when they get hit. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Thanks for your help...

Well, at 100 or less, I would not be too concerned about accuracy.

I would go with Supreme 50. I'll bet any would be great.

Good luck, let me know how any of them do.

Hey Doug- Take a little time and read some of the past stuff. There is a plethora of information here (try saying that with crackers in your mouth). Reading the topics regarding the 223 vs varmints could easily become a part time job. Hope this helps. Darrin

C5 I have been using 55 grain Horn. vmax's in my 22.250 and .223. The 22.250 is launching them at 3450 and the .223 around 3100+ - a little. I get excellent vaporization with both. I have used Nosler BT's and Sierra BK's with about the same results. My .223 will remove all evidence with the 55 at 3100 better than a 40 grain vmax at 3700. Amazing but true. As of Tuesday I will only shoot 55's out of both rifles for pdogging.

C5, I blew up a crow last week with a .22 mag V-Max last week. Chunks and mist. That was .22WMR. While I've not used the AR15 with the 50 gr V-Max on a ground squirrel (yet), I imagine it will be, "poof, you're no longer a squirrel!". If Lavoy says the 55 will remove the evidence, I'd have to take that to the bank.

I've used 40, 45, 50, and 55 grain bullets. Seem to have better luck with any of them when they are going really fast. I like the plastic tip bullets out of my .223 at about 3500-3600 fps.

If you should happen to miss seeing the hit, don't worry, it sounds like a balloon popping. I mean like a BIG balloon popping!

I've killed just about everything from a tweetie bird to a deer with the 55 grain ballistic tips all brands but really like the blitz king.

My LTR shots the 55 much better then the lighter builts. not enough twist for em

C5 I personally use the Winchester 55 Grains That I can buy at Walmart 40 rounds for $7.50. I cant even reload them for that price. As far as getting chucks to fly in the air the 55 gr will tear an 8 inch hole in the back side of them that is pretty impressive.

I've shot the cartridges that dutchman is talking about. But, the ones from Wal-Mart are 45 grain jacketed hollowpoints.

They do a super nice job though, and according to the printing on the box, they are moving at 3600 fps.

The prairie dogs go pop, just like a big ole balloon!

tusero,

My walmart sells the winchester white box in either 45 grains or 55 gr fmj. the 45's are more expensive than the 55 grainers.

Used the 55s last weekend on a woodchuck competition out to 220 yards ( a long shot here in PA) and wanted to save as much of the critters as possible for weigh in.

Well I went to the store, I bough the Win. Supreme Ballistic tips. The 40 grainers were on sale so I got 5 boxes of those. I also got a box of 50 grainers and a box of 55 just to try. I will let you guys know which ones I had the best result with next time I go hunting.

Thanks for you the help!!

Battlescared, sorry for not getting back to you sooner -

I'm using the Remington Premier V-Max, because that is what my dealer had on hand. I know there are one or two other companies making a .22 V-Max, but I don't recall which is more accurate. I think they were about $9-10 a box, but I know you can find them for $8.50 in some places.

Shooting a Marlin 882SS bolt gun with a cheap 3x9. The Marlin with the V-Max shoots so well it deserves a better scope, so I'm going to get another Aetec 2.8x10 for it. Currently, the best benched group of 5 at 100 yards is .78". The only mod so far is the trigger work I did to bring it down to 1.2 pounds and a LOT less travel. That helped a bunch.

Looking for an accurate solid point for squirrels, something that won't turn them into soup. I've been using CCI Maxi-Mags, but they are not an accurate round in this rifle.
