What gun to buy for timber wolf hunt????

As many coyotes I've seen run off after being hit hard with a 223 I would step up to the larger caliber. Coyotes weigh what? 30 pounds and a wolf is 100 plus maybe 140 or more? I really think those wanting to use a 223 is putting way too much faith in that caliber/bullet combo. Not to say a very well placed shot won't kill them, just that I would want it to drop DRT. The 243 with an 80-90 grain bullet is where I would be looking.

I have used my 220 swift with a 60 grain HP. and it works fine. I'm thinking about a dedicated wolf rifle. It will likely be 243 or 25.06. They can take some killing. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

.

Catshooter..wow !! i'm guessing that would be a great "WOOF" gun..

You said you were interested in buying a new gun for a wolf hunt. On that note you have a large gap between the 22/250 and the 35 Rem. Both great calibers (I have both). I would steer you to a light weight short action rifle in a 308 based round. 7-08 would be fantastic for wolves, deer, coyotes, moose, anything else up there? You could step it up to 30, 338 or 358 caliber or down to 6.5 or .243 as already mentioned.

For rifles I would favor a Rem M7, or Kimber Montana but less expensive options are available.
