Hi guys,
I admit that I've never hunted a turkey.
However, when calling coyotes, I sometimes like to "play" with any turkeys I see.

On an open-reed, I make sounds that sound like "yelps" & also "cutts".
When I do these, the turkeys always run away as fast as they can.

true yelps and cutts generally don't run turkeys off, though they will on occasion. You are doing something wrong. You may be getting spotted before you try calling they have incredible eyesight.

Oh, Glenn, I know that they are aware of my presence. Because sometimes I see them as I drive down the highway, turn around & stop on the shoulder. Even so, they (toms, jakes & hens) will continue to slowly feed, sometimes towards me even.
But as soon as I make that noise on the call, they head for the hills...fast.
The reason I'm calling my noises the names I did, is that they sound similar to the sounds I hear on the FoxPro site.
 
Ask yourself how many coyotes would you expect to respond to the call when you are sitting in the truck on the shoulder of the road? Basically the same answer for the turkeys.
 
OK, I'm not trying to call the turkeys...or anything else. I'm not hunting.
I'm just trying to figure out if I'm sending them some sort of warning call.
And what the heck is being said by a real turkey when it "yelps" & "cutts".
 
the alarm putt is the danger call, yelps and clucks (cutting is just loud sharp clucks) cackles and the like are typical turkey sounds, the reason they run when you do it from the road is the turkeys know that those sounds shouldn't be coming from that place, they get spooked and do what spooked turkeys do.

Not hearing your sound it's hard to say what may be spooking them to go the other way .calling to much my spook them, call to little and that may spook them . there are many reasons they will walk away
Yelps can mean many things to a bird, weather it's tom or hen, they may start the morning with a location yelp or "" tree yelp"" these are slow soft sounds.Then you may hear a gathering yelp or what I call ( I am over here yelp) the sound of a hen gathering here young or the group back together. witch can be a cadence of 4 or 5 semi fast yelps . then you may hear fast yelping , this fast yelping i have always took to be a sound of frustration , the sound made by a bird that's not getting what it wont's,, ether not seeing what's she or he thinks it should be seeing or not getting the reaction from the other members of the flock she or he is looking for . everything is in your cadence and the amount of notes your putting out in your yelps that will tell them what your trying to say.

at the 314 mark you will hear a hen sound off with a yelp as i aggravate her. then a min, later at 414 mark more yelps ( that are asking me were i am) at the 436 mark of the tape she is yelping with a little more aggression toured me ,508 mark even more,then at the 530 mark i feel she's back to asking me were i am with her yelps.then at 619 mark on the tape after i spook the tom off she with a sort yelp is looking for them now.

cutting sound also can mean many things

remember a turkey's eyes are one of the best out there,
