what is best? 270 wsm or 300 wsm

I am interested in getting one of these new calibers, has anyone ever used one? I do hunt most the time in very open country, and the animals can be 300 yards or more. I have a 30-06 so far has done me well. But am looking for a longer range gun.

For open ground, the 270 WSM should fit the bill. Just make sure you are careful with bullet selection. The 270 can zip the Failsafes & Partitions through a deer or antelope without expanding. It is very effective on elk as well, with plenty of power to shatter bones.

YEah I would lie the 270 also, but thats just me. I wonder if anyone has worked up a fur load for the 270 WSM in a 110 gr bullet?

i would go with the 300wsm... i own both and the 300 will carry more energy with a little more athority then the 270.

I think the .270 wsm would be better if you are mostly hunting deer. I know the regular .270 win. piles up elk so I dont see why the wsm version wound't do better.

I can't really say which is the best but, prefer the 270 WSM over the 300 . I purchased the Model 70 Feather Weight in LH and replaced the stock with a McMillan's Classic . It groups the 140 gr Nosler Accubond 1/2 to 3/4 inch at 100 yards with MagPro. I don't believe you can go wrong with either cal. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

If elks on the agenda at longer ranges, the sensible choice is the 300 WSM with a good 180g bullet such as the AB. It will get the job done out there a ways.

If mostly for deer, the 270 WSM is a great performer with 140g bullets at long range. I was pushing 140's at 3250fps with magpro. That makes for a very excellent LR deer medicine. Loaded with a good 150g partition at 3100fps, it will still take its fair share of elk out to at least 600 yards, giving good shot placement. I would not feel undergunned what so ever.

The choice is yours, both will do what you want easily to 600 yards up to elk, the 300 WSM will just be alittle more insurance.

Try the .325 WSM and forget about the other two. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Just kidding they all have their place and it's like the age old .270 versus 30.06 question of which is better. Take a look at the ballistics and what your abilities are and what distances and game you will be setting your sights on. Anyway you go you will enjoy any of the calibers but seriously take a look at the ballistics for the .325 WSM. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I have 2 Tikka T3 LS in 270WSM (wife took over the first one). We have taken deer, elk and moose with the 270WSM using 140gr Accubonds. Distances varied from about 100 yards o as far as 440. Great performance by the bullet. All 1 shot kills, and most of the time, double lung complete pass-thru. The 270WSM has proven to me as quite a performer especially on the elk and moose. I love my Sako m75SS 300WM but I may hunt this whole season with my 270WSM.

My reloads use Retumbo getting between 3160-3250 ft/sec and under 1/2" 5 shot groups at 100 metres. One rifle likes a bit more powder than the other.

FOr factory ammo I would reccomend either Winchester Supreme Accubonds or Federal Accubonds or TSX in 140gr.

If you want a bit more energy and use a larger bullet, go with the 300WSM in 180gr Accubonds. Maybe even 165gr Accubonds.

I never want to discourage anyone from obtaining another gun, but if you've got a good '06, you could just read your signature line and keep whatcha got. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I just got a 300wsm in the weather guard version shoots great with 180 silver ballistic tips 1/2 3/4 moa but is just a little expensive for shooting dear when you can use a .223 or .243. but they dont go any where when you shoot them with the 300 i think the most steps one took this season was 3.

great call but not as cheep as the .270

I have the 300 WSM (Browning X-bolt) and would have to recommend it. Recoil is not bad with their new recoil pad system, and the 300 WSM would give you that little extra knock-down insurance at longrange.

I have both, plus a 300 Weatherby, and I would recommend the 270WSM of the 2, with high BC bullets, the 270 shoots flatter and hits harder past 500 that the 300 does, just check your ballistics, it will tell the tale. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I can't say that the 270wsm is better than the 300wsm just becuase I don't own or know anyone who owns at 300wsm. I have a 270 wsm Browning Abolt and LOVE IT! Around here our shots are typically 0 - 250 yds. I use a Winchester Supreme Ballistic Silvertip in 130 grain. These are the thin skiined animal bullets. From 0 - 250yds with that bullet, if you hit a deer in the kill zone, he'll never take a step! I tried the Fail Safe bullets and they don't expand on deer. With the ballistic silvertip you'll have an entrance the size of the bullet, but it expands and can do some major meat damage if you hit the sholder bone. I would highly recommend the 270 wsm for deer hunting. But like I said I have no basis for a comparsion with the 300wsm.
