What is really good about Leupold in two words

CUSTOMER SERVICE

I recently saw a post about optics and some of the posters were dissatisfied with Leupold. Leupolds are on top of the majority of my rifles. Lately, I put a VXI 1.5-4 power on top an AR. I haven't been happier. It holds zero and is very clear and sharp.

Last year I bought a RXBIV. This is a laser range finder binocular combination unit. When I got it the compass didn't work. I went ahead and used it for my antelope hunt and it did the job I purchased it for. I didn't really need a compass. However, I wasn't that happy with this purchase. The optics were substandard IMHO, and the combined unit was too big to carry a spare set of binos. I wished that I just purchased the more compact RXIV rangefinder only unit. About three months ago I sent the RXBIV back to Leupold to get the compas repaired. When I called a month later, they were waiting for a shipment that was due in the middle of September so they could just replace it. Well by the third week of September I called them again, and the customer service guy still didn't have a date. He made me an offer of ONE RXIV laser range finder plus a 10x50 pair of their Olympic Binos which are guaranteed for life. I just received these units yesterday, and I couldn't be happier.

I will continue to buy their rifle scopes even if their is some glass that is clearer for the same or less money for two reasons: Leupold rifle scopes are made in america and their customer service is fantastic.

Sounds like they did you right... though it took a while.

My two words for Leupold are SAFE BET. You never have to worry about getting stuck with junk.

Now, to digress a bit...

The best rangefinder in practical use I've found is the Bushnell YP1000, the older, BLOCKY one.

Why is this one so good?

First, it's got big eyes... large objective lenses make it more sensitive (and bigger and blockier, albeit). /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Second, and more inportantly I think, it's got a target quality indicator, which is a little meter at the bottom of the screen which tells you how close you're getting to a usable reflective signal. This allows you to really hone in on a distant target to get a reading when you otherwise might decide there is not chance of a reading.

Bushnell eliminated this feature in their Elite 1500 rangefinders, and for that reason the YP1000 generally outperforms the Elite (though the Elite is more expensive and supposed to read farther, which it does not).

Not exactly the subject matter of the thread, but since you're on the topic of rangefinders I thought I'd mention that the old YP1000 is the one to beat. Even the Leicas don't have the target quality meter (I'm told)... so that's a real bummer. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

The absence of a Target Quality Indicator in a range finder is about like having a 10 MOA circle for your crosshair intersection on your scope... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif bad juju.

Dan, that makes sense to have some type of target quaility indiacator. Too bad no one else has bothered.

ColtChris: I've heard that argument and I cannot agree or disagree with you because I haven't done any recent comparisons. I have one Nikon scope that I bought new 25 years ago. It has been a great scope. I just have no idea what their new stuff is like. The gun shop I frequent favors Leupold over anything else. The one thing I can say against the Monarchs and Conquests is they are not made in America.

I would rather spend a little more and support american workers whenever possible. The Harris bipod company now has a chinese competetor. I was offered the off shore one while in the market and turned it down. This is just me and isn't for everyone, but I buy American when we offer good products at good prices.

Leupold scopes are too expensive for my pocket book. Would take an Elite or Monarch any day.

Yup, me too. I can't afford to put a Zeiss Conquest on every rifle but I would if I could. But I do have 3200 Bushys and 4200 Bushys and they do just fine.

I wont sell the Leupolds that I own now, but I doubt that I be buying anymore.
