What is the effective range of a .22 LR?

Thats awsome but it makes me feel stupid for picking your braing about LR stuff earlier today. LOL

So I am going to guess the guy that got hit in the head with a .22 was unfortunately hit by the fact that the "hilly" a half a mile away was aiming at a 100 yard target. Unfortunately he was aiming about 20 feet high.

Yeah the bullet can go pretty far. The fact remains that you should be responsible and shoot any firearm at the most effective range said by the manufacturer.

Sure there are stories bragging of this guy doing this and that guy doing that and it was so amazing that he could do that far of a shot with that firearm. So where are the friends of the "hilly" bragging about his 1/2 mile human shot?

NOBODY BRAGS ABOUT STUPID SHOTS. Look into what the manufacturer recommends and please for my sake and others be careful.

Having been raised in that part of the country, no one was "bragging" about it... and probably one of the locals doing some squirrel hunting and missing one in a tree... Certainly not the best practice, but a common one around there...

It could have just as easily been a ricochet from a missed ground shot...I'm sure we've all had them at one time or another...

Now that is funny. I had a "Mall Ninja" like that in my
shop one day(a friend of my oldest son). Spewing all kinds
of crap he read on the internet. He had impressed himself
with his Beretta 92 on my pistol range, shooting with my son.
He wanted to be a "sniper". I hauled out my 300 WSM "Sniper
Rifle", took him to the range, set up a 300m target, and gave
him a quick talk on technique. I shot one 3 round group, on
one target, for demonstration. So Mr. Ninja settles in, sends
the round, and starts pulling off his protective glasses that
I supplied. Mr. Ninja took a pretty good hit from a Leupold,
was saved by the shooting glasses, and was re-thinking this
whole "sniper" thing. OK, but Mr. Ninja explained he was a
"pistol" guy well trained in CQB. Next to the pistol range.
So we did one shoot from cover, move, re-load, and shoot from
cover drill. I think he hit one of the silhouette targets
just above the groin. He was having a bad day, but that
didn't disengage his mouth.

The You Tube video brought back fond memories.

I would say 150 yards is the normal effective kill range for under fox sized game. I hav shot 12"x20" plates at 350 yds evry 6 out of 10 shots lol. But thts with 20 ft. of holdover and 4 ft of windage in 1 12mph crosswind lol. Stay within 150 and you should be ok.

It should be a mandatory video for site users. Oh yeah... we need to add something in there about the 17HMR too

Maybe it isn't so much for the uninformed asking an innocent but ignorant (true definition of the word) question. However, maybe some of the follow-up answers and wannabe attitudes that get tossed around so freely on the 'Net could remind a thinking person of the video. Or, it could just be me...

I grew up shooting 22LR and used them all the time. On the farm we dispatched cows and hogs with them for processing. We used them for hunting everything but deer. Durring the summer I would shoot 500 to 1000 rounds a day and flat wore out a few guns.

Back then I loved to hunt grounghogs and killed quite a few past 100 yards. I'll not say how far away the longest shot was but I thought I missed and was getting ready to take a second shot when he fell over.

The one thing I learned is if you are going to ask a 22lr to do something above and behond, use solids and put the bullet where it belongs. Some of the hollow points will limit penetration and I think that is the main reason people don't relize what a 22lr will do. Solids will kill anything with 4 legs in the lower USA. My biggest weight kill was just over 800 lbs.

That video was pretty funny, but if I was the OP I'd be a little ticked if I was asking a serious question.

In Arkansas you can only hunt on public land with a shotgun or .22 rimfire. So I have taken a .22 many times and no I don't think it's enough but it's the only thing legal here. I take head shots on everything with a .22 when I'm hunting yotes on public land.

That was my whole point. Nobody is bragging about it.
