What is the farthest distance a 4X fixed scope is good for?

I use mostly 4.5-14 Leupolds in the Vari X III or Mark 4 scopes. I have often wished I had a 2X setting way more often than I have the need for 14 power. My scopes never go higher than the bottom end setting unless I'm looking at someting far off and want to see it a little better. All of my coyote shooting is done on 4.5X. A 2x-7x scope is ideal, your 4x scope will work just fine out to your shooting distances.

Your 4X is fine; as mentioned earlier, most guys are way over glassed. There is absolutey no need for big glass when calling coyotes, in fact, it will end up handcuffing you more times than it helps. Nothing worse, than pulling up on a hard charger at 40 yards, only to find you've cranked your 4X14 up on 14X., and all you see is a blur,or brush, or if your really lucky, fur, and you won't know if it's tail fur or chest fur.
I have a bold heavy duplex 1.5X6 on my 19 Calhoon coyote rig,and with that glass, from the bench, Ive shot honest groups that measure in the .3's, and those cross hairs literally cover up a one inch square on the target.Big glass is more suited for the PD colonies, but not really needed for a called coyote at normal calling ranges.

Spend $100 bucks on ammo and shoot that thing a bunch. You will find with practice, 4x at 300 yards is doable. Personally I have trouble seeing coyotes out that far in the sage with the naked eye and find it easy to lose them with the scope cranked up. I have a 3x9 on my rifle because that is what I had on the shelf. I usually leave it on 4x.

I shot this group at 100 yards with iron sights (4 shots), I can't do it every time but with practice...

I used to hunt fox around Port Washington in the 60's and early seventies and I used a 223 with a K-4 Weaver, it worked fine. I'm out in WA now and my calling guns carry low power scopes, 6x45mm has a 1x4 Leupold and the 22-204 has a Sightron 1.5x6 both of them have presighted backup scopes one is K-4 Weaver Classic and a 4x Weaver Grand Slam.

I think you'll do just fine with a 4x scope. A nice 4x with clear sharp edge to edge optics will be a much better scope than a fuzzy fisheyed 3x9.

thanks for all the replies fellas. I'll stick with my 4X for now. One thing I failed to mention is a lot of my calling is at night (with a scope light). Another reason why my shots will mostly be within 150 yards.

I am really getting into target shooting though, which is one reason why I'd love to get a higher power scope.
But the local target range only goes out to 200 yards anyway.
I live in a land of trees, brush, and 40 acre fields. So long distance shooting is a tough proposition around here.

What FALFire said. My two main coyote guns both carry 4.4-14X scopes and I always leave them on the low end setting. My longest shot with the .204 was just under 300 yards, shot at 4.5X. If a 4X is all you have now than shoot it. I would bet that more coyotes are missed because of to much power rather than not enough.

when calling coyote's..as far as scope power goes..i really believe..less is more..i started calling coyote's only five year's ago my impression's based upon all the thing's i had read i thought i needed a 6x18..& was po'd i only had a 3x9..so what did i do ?? went calling with my scope set @ 9 power..after several missed chance's @ coyote's..i pulled up & as mentioned only saw fur..didn't know if it was shoulder..chest..hindquarter's..i had no idea..anyway after missing more coyote's than i care to mention..i powered down..i have used a 2x7 the last four year's..it work's much better..i hunt the sage country of the snake river plain & northern great basin..someday when i have the "gut's" i'm goin 1x4..
