Does any body have any links or true field data where I might read up on the most accurate .20 cal cartridge? I'm interested in building a shooter and it could be a wildcat or a factory caliber, whatever, as long as it has proven capable of one holers at 200 yards...what's the best known today guys?

Oh, boy......./ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif This should get interesting..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

No doubt it will be built on a Savage action as they are the only factory rifle capable of new NBRSA/IBS group records "right out of the box"....that have been "documented" on the Internet. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Just maybe I'm slow today /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif Is that true for the Savages or just a funny /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

The smiley faces means it's a funny... Scratch that... the "savage" makes it a funny... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Everyone knows remingtons are the only ones that can do that out of the box /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I personally thought the white box comment was the best /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

Whoops!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Check this website: /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Read some of the articles and topics there. You will come away with some real insight on accuracy.

I'd think the 20 Vartarg and a close second would be 20PPC/BR. I love the comments on the white box ammo and Savage. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif.

BTW, I've got plenty of 700/40x actions.....and they're for sale..........CHEAP /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif. They could be on the next equipment list in PS. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I like my Browning Varmint Stalker BUT Silverfox's 204 Savage VLP is about as good a shooter as you can get, custom or right out of the box, as is Silverfox's, no smiley faces here, I mean heck how accurate do you have to be, tiny tiny groups at 100 all from the factory,

Just want to add that when winchester does get the 20cal white box ammo going the savage and nef will shoot it --1/2" ALL DAY LONG-- !!!

I'd say on a more serious note 20ppc or 20br or 20vt.

Kingofcoins, there's humorous posts on here at times,it makes the time pass.I don't even know exactly what it means but i still like it.
Welcome and we aren't suppose to send people to other web-sites but there's a place called saubier then a dot, then com, lots of sub-caliber stuff.Best of luck Mike

All smiles or frowns aside....let's be realistic, folks.

Check out the NBRSA group records at 200 yards shot with rifles costing ~$5K built by the best in the busines, and then realistically expect a one hole group from a factory rifle with a $10 barrel at 200 yards.

Some of you might be delusional, but I'm not in that crowd.

The Internet is packed with all kinds of factory rifles that will shoot 0.XXX" groups "All Day Long", "If the shooter does his part", and if you don't count the occasional "called flyer", or the stray bullet hole covered by the dime.

Try shooting sanctioned BR and see if it's really as easy as some folks would like you to believe it is. To be competetive, your shooting bags/rests will likely cost more than the average factory rifle. By the way, I have several very accurate 20 caliber custom rifles, but they won't put 'em all in one hole at 200 yards. Neither of them are anywhere the equal of a good BR rig, but they are both far from the average factory rifle at the other end of the spectrum. If you think it's probably just shooter error on my part, I'd be glad to let you try it with one of them - and count all your shots. And bring your factory shooter along so we can compare groups between the two rifles.....

None of the "out of the box" Brand X factory rifles will perform heroics daily like some might want us to believe. Any accurate factory rifle might do something spectacular once in awhile, but not all the time. I'll let you choose what Brand X stands for.

By the way, Winchester already has a 20 caliber load for the 204 Ruger that hasn't established itself as a real accurate round at this point in time. It only comes in 20 round boxes. Maybe putting it in a bigger box with 40 rounds in the box will improve its accuracy significantly.

Just a little reality.....

PS - Saubier.com is an excellent web site if you like small caliber stuff. BR Central is good also if you're really interested in understanding what accuracy is all about - and how to measure real accuracy.

what up ? i can't help but to jump in as mentioned above i think a handi rifle or better yet a encore with winny white box will do the trick !! my opinion is based on all the posts regarding incredible marksmanship with the above products, not a slam on handi's or encores.a one hole shooter is out of my league as my pocket book isn't that fat !! good luck...

My new Armalite Ar 15 shot a one hole group at 100 yds when I broke it in. 100 shots gave me about a 3 inch hole with $3 per 20 ammo.

BCB,
He says he wants to 'build' and it can be a wildcat or factory cartridge.

I read some of your posts on tne 20's and i know you know them. What would you build to shoot the best groups at 200yds?
I'd like to rebarrel my CZ 221 fireball into a 20 vartarg but it shoots so well i can't bring myself to do it.Mike

The key to shooting one hole at 200 yards is not in the gun it is in the technique. Just shoot once. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Mike:

From my experience with the 20's, a 20 VT or a 20 PPC would both give very good accuracy at 100 yards and beyond. The Tac 20 is also capable of exceptional accuracy in a good rifle and would work well.

In reality, however, I would not expect any of them to be consistent, all day, one hole shooters at any distance without a lot of luck, practice and muchos $$. And even then, no guarantees.

I have the CZ in 221 FB also, and mine is a tack driver, too, but not a consistent daily one hole shooter. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Kingofcoins checking back in here...what a ride folks !...and I thought all you guys were dead dry serious, but I think it was an entertaining thread at least... haven't laughed so loud for awhile...keep up the smiles.

Now onto the serious stuff...I realize what it would take to have a 200 yard bug hole gun...any gun, and it would not be just cash, or luck or reloads, it would take a lot hard earned professional design, and the in-depth skill to load for it, and for sure the intense skill to shoot it...and that just doesn't come out of any box white or not too often. That said, I figure as much as suggested so far the cartridge candidates might be the 20ppc or 20br or 20vt. But in reality I think most would agree it would be an easier goal for a larger caliber to obtain..like .243 etc.

I am very fortunate to own one of these steel and wood anomalies.Speaking truthfully I have a .243 Win totally out of the box 1968 Mdl 70 Varminter, that I would put up to many folks for accuracy. It has been realistically phenomenal for a factory gun right from the first shot. I have never had the stock off or adjusted or touched the gun other than with an oily silk cloth. And this is why. I used to carry a piece of one of its targets in my wallet about the size of a credit card. Big you say, well not for 485 yards it wasn't. This was shot in the wild from one hill to the next, no sandbag only a foam pad on top my camera tripod. And the 5 shot group size...?...mind you no warm up shots, no misses, no 6th shot...was center to center 0.725"
That's why I may never touch the gun in any way and why NO its NOT for sale. It has repeatedly done things like... 10 shot fast as you can fire in hot weather 0.315"@100yds, 3 shot 375yd 0.455", 3 shot 400yd 0.550", 5shot 200yd 0.278", to name some of the best groups.
Another of its rare talents...I found a musty box of that awesome 485 yard load last year that I loaded back in 1975. I hadn't shot the gun in a few years either so I did brush the bore and solvent dry patched it. Ok yeah used a sandbag off lawn and target was only 335 yards. I laughed on the way down range after 4 shots cause I couldn't see a mark on the paper with the 20x Supertargetspot...what was I thinking 30 year old ammo, rusty me, wind, old sight settings?. I had to get down close at the target to rub my eyes as there off in the side of black were all 4 shots doing a 0.870" huddle .
OK...OK I can hear it all now...but that folks is the rare reality of this game...a lot of guns are called but few are chosen. Hope you enjoyed this as much as I enjoy the gun...fat chance.
Anyway I will check out any and all suggestions for the best .20 cal bet. I also have a .22-250 custom mauser, and an 03-A3, that are simliar wonders, so I want to complete the set!

get um close,
I've been waiting for that answer!

BCB,

I was being sarcastic w/ the "all day long talk" ,i see it thrown around alot on some boards.
I've did quite a bit of reading over at benchrest and longrange hunting
