What is the most accurate .20 cal cartridge known to date?

Not to get off subject or hi-jack a thread....

The problem with building a 20 cal LV/HV rifle is wind. Yeah can it be made accurate...YES. But the shooter must be on his/her A-game even in the lightest of winds. With that being said pick up a PS and read the groups/aggs of the match winners, then read what is was shot with. I bet you won't find many 20 cals or anything but trued/sleeved 700's and customs. I'm just getting into competitive bench shooting and boy DO I have a lot to learn. I thought I would be able to compete with a worked over 40X...........wrong answer. Had my a$$ handed to me and I shot pretty good. Best group .125 and agg was .206 and didn't even put me in the top 10. For that matter top 15

If I was going to try it, I'd use a shortened version of the PPC case. Say maybe a .185 short .20PPC. No problem getting a good .20 caliber barrel these days. Real issue will be getting world class bench rest quality bullets. Mike Moberly is making some 45 gr. bullets on .224 J4 jackets and I know some guys are getting some pretty decent aggs with them. But I think it will take J4 deciding to make some jackets just for the .204 caliber before you'll see ready availability of bullets that can compete. I don't see wind as much of a factor, since the BC of the .20's is so high and the velocity will be there too. If anything, they might have an advantage in the wind.

Correct.

Or, you can shoot a bunch of one shot groups at different targets each day and you get the same result. The good thing about doing it that way is you get a lot more one hole groups to brag about.....each day.....

I own a factory barreled .204 ruger,it has shot 1/2" groups at 100 yrds with my current load (35 grain bergers and H4895 powder). Is it capable of that sized groups at 200 yards?I doubt it.Is it worth the extra cash to go with a wildcat .20 caliber,to bring that half inch group to a quarter inch group? Not to me.But I'm not really a paper shooter anyway. For me reality is what you do with the gun in the field under hunting conditions. And the .204 continues to impress the hell out of me in every way.0-300+ yards it just flat whacks coyotes. If you want to be a world class paper shooter the 20 caliber is probably not the answer.(probaly better off with the 222,22ppc,22br,6ppc)The .204 is probably the most critized caliber out there.Alot of the 22 cal. and up guys claim it doesn't have enough energy to consistently kill coyotes, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gifalot of the .17 caliber guys say it's to much gun for the serious hide hunters, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gifand even some of the .20 caliber guys DIS it and say the 20 caliber wildcats are better. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gifLOL As for me I am very happy with the accuracy, speed capabilities, knock down, lack of expense both the gun itself and all of the components. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gifThe availability of bullets will come in time. For ME right now it is the perfect calling rifle.FWIW Good Hunting Chad

I've decided to build my 20 cal gun based on the 6mmNorma BR round, or a 20BR. I have a short action Rem 700 BDL to use for it. Am now finalizing a barrel to buy. I want it to be a 26" medium heavy sporter weight in stainless. I will need it to be chambered, contoured, crowned and threaded for the 700 action. I have about $400...so, Question now is whose barrel do I buy, and should I have them chamber it, or have a local smith do the work, or who? Any input on the most likely accurate maker would help me ..Thanks!

I'm closing this one and opening a new thread on barrel choice in Firearms and Reloading caled 'Want to buy a 20 caliber barrel..help!'
