I am just curious as to what people think is the most accurate mid range (500 yards plus) rifle cartridge and what is the most accurate long range (1000 yards plus) rifle cartridge.

Mid-Range: 6.5-284
Long-Range: 416 Barrett

Some of the shooters are liking the 6.5x47 and the 6x47 Lapua for the midrange. I hear the 308 win is kinda popular too.

Hard to fault the 6.5-284 for anything IMO, other than it is harder on barrels than the tamer 308, but it is a rocket and accurate as [beeep].
Never shot the big 416 Barrett, Cheytac's, etc. They all have stellar reputations.

I know that in 04 a 6mm Dasher set a record at 1000. In 07 I believe a caliber called 300 Hulk set a new record by grouping 5 shots in the X ring at 1000, measuring ~1.5"..

The 6 Dasher is also superb at 500 yds.

My vote goes with a 6.5mm on a big case such as 284, 06' or WSM type case. Or any of the 7mm for 500-1000 yards. I have tested and shot it, It may not win as many competitions as others but effective.

For long range 1500 yards plus my vote goes big 338 (edge, Cheytac, Snipe tac, Lapua) then to 408 cheytac then the ultimate is the 375 cheytac, personally I think its the best Ultra long range caliber.

Mid range I'll put my vote on 6mm remington or 243 win although with the right rig and load itll be fine to 1000.

Out to 1000 I would vote on some type of 7mm. My next savage build is probably going to be some type of 7mm probably a wsm or rsaum. I'll worry about it when it comes time to order a barrel.

This is purely speculation.

If you want to know what the most accurate cartridges are...look to see what is winning national caliber matches. The 6mmbr is proven and the two Lapua rounds that coyotejunki mentioned are showing excitement.

if you go to benchrest.com . there are forums on f -class and 600 and 1000 yard benchrest. the 6.5-284 wins a lot . the winner in long range high power at raton shot a 7mm wsm. both have a short barrel life. there is no 6ppc of the long range game. all will shoot less than 1/2 inch. almost all have custom barrels krieger, hart, bartlein. team savage wins a lot with 6.5-284 and savages.

6mmBR or variation thereof out to 600 . Big 30--300 Ackley 300 Hulk,or any of the wildcats using 30 cal. bullets and quality brass on out to 1000. Operator error is still the biggest obstacle to long range precision.

My vote goes to the 17 HMR!

Out to 600 yards you'd be hard hard pressed to beat a fast twist 6BR shooting heavy bullets..105-108, consistantly they rule the 600 yard IBS, winning a vast majority of the matches without question.. next I'd say the 6 X 47 Lapua shooting heavy bullets would take second place, could be that not alot of people are making the switch for various reasons..I'm a little surprised that the 6.5x47 Lapua is not doing alot better and gaining much of a following..could be the availability of those lightweight 6.5 bullets. With all of the new super scopes being produced these days, long range shooting will become alot less complicated in the future, can you imagine the view from a 42x lightforce, 50x sightron and the super March scopes of 60X and new this year 80X...sure will make it alot easier to say the least..and I've looked throught all those scopes and they are super clear and bright..
