What is the smallest centerfire bolt action?

THe time has come for me to outfit my boy with a "real" rifle.

He has been using my savage 219b, but off a rest the break action is a pain. Im very fond of the interarms/c. daly/ rem 799 mini mauser rifles, but cant find one in 221 fireball, which is what he would like.

Anyways- I know of these and the sako vixens, but is there anyone else who makes a dinky good quality action?

CZ gets my vote, haven't shot one that wasn't a shooter, the triggers are excellent also. They have "mini-mauser" actions and are built really well.

peace.

Nothing wrong with any of the Remingtons, I own 6 of them, but remember, the small Remington action is sized for a .308/.243 cartridge. The CZ 527 on the other hand is specifically made for a .223 sized round MAX. It's just a lot smaller action.

I was looking at a sako vixen/marlin 322, and I also noticed the cooper rifles seem to be smaller, but I dont even know where to look for those used. Ive got an nra kimber 8400 in 338fed unfired in the bos and plastic for trade if anyone's interested. I was thinking of having it rebarreled, but Id hate to ruin a collector rifle like that.

I went with the CZ for my daughter. She held the Ruger compact and Rem 7 & 700 youth models and she liked the CZ best. It was the lightest rifle of the ones we looked at. At the time Boyds had stocks for them so I got one and cut it down to fit her and kept the factory stock long for me to use or for when she gets bigger. The draw back to the CZ is you must use high rings or modify the bolt handle. Even then ring choices are limited. The high scope can be a problem for the kids. The Boyds stock has less drop at the comb which helps. But last time I looked they were no longer offering them.

+1 on the CZ. I had two in .221 Fireball. One I rebarrelled to .17 Fireball. Both were extremely accurate out of the box. Buy the CZ, adjust the trigger yourself, send the bolt to James Calhoon and exchange it for a shaved bolt, mount a scope in medium rings. Your son will have one of the most accurate, fun to shoot guns that he will enjoy for a long time.

CZ, or Rem Model 7 will work.
Or, a youth sized Weatherby Vanguard in 223. I have one that shoots very well. It comes with two stocks, a youth size, and an adult size.

Question- Id read somewhere that the 221 CZ's had extractor issues, whats your experience been?

Savage makes a model 40, which is a little less than the CZs. Not sure how they shoot but I've wanted one since they came out.

Model 40's shoot great . However , they are not small guns . The action is small but it's a big gun .My son has a micro madalion and it's a small action .

+2 on the CZ527.

The CZ527 is a micro-Mauser action. Controlled round feed. I have two of them, one is a .22 Hornet, the other is a .223Rem. Neither one of them has had an extractor issue of any kind.

Having looked in the bores with a borscope I can say they have some of the best looking barrels I've ever seen on a factory rifle. Both of mine have better looking bores than my Savage Model 12 LRPV.

The single set trigger is a complete joy to use. The triggers on both of mine are perfect right out of the box.

My .223, CZ527 American Sporter, will turn in slightly bigger than caliber sized 3 shot groups with my GH load when I do my part.

It shoots 55g bullets into clover leafs.

The bolt handle is an issue for some (I've no problem with it but I can see how it might bother some folks) but that can be fixed.

When I reach into the safe the .223 seems to stick to my hand about every time. It is light, reliable, and accurate. All in all, a delightful rifle for walk around varmint hunting.
