What is your definition of a "Preditor Gun"?

I been thinking about this some for the last couple of weeks. What got me to thinking about it was this...as I posted before, I finally got a real life (my dream gun)"Predator Gun", a Winchester model 70 in .225.

So as I have been admiring the rifle, I began to wonder what I have been toating around and killing coyotes with for the last 3 years, if not a predator rifle?

I think the difference in my mind is that this new to me .225 was built to be a predator/varment gun...the bolt action 30-30, the .243, the .270, they were all built for other things, I used them as Predator guns, but that is the sole purpose for this gun...

So I just thought, I see threads about single shot break actions, black rifles, bolt guns, and others...

So how do you define "Predator Gun" for your needs?

Mostly a gun of under 243 with light recoil and good accuracy. Most guys that hunt predators rather than varmints like a standard weight rifle than can be carried easily and is still very accurate.

Calibers such as the various 17's, 20's 22's and 243's seem to be on the favorite list. Some predator rifles such as the 243 can carry over to a deer rifle as well as a good predator gun.

Folks that harvest hides like the 17's and 20's and even some of the lighter 22's such as the 222 or 223. Once you get to the 22-250 and above fur damage can be excessive though those guns kill very well.

What IDBOB said. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif Although I consider myself a Varmint Hunter, all of my Predators have been taken while deer hunting using a 7MM.

"Predators" are mostly shot while responding to something that has them all pumped up, as well as the shooter being pumped on adrenaline. The action is usually fast and furious and in close with the possibility of as fast exit on their part. The rifle is usually short, easy handling repeater, often an autoloader for follow up shots after the numerous misses.

Now "Varmints" on the other hand are shot at a longer distance and at a more leisurely pace, while enjoying conversation with friends as well as some cold drinks with some fried chicken or other gourmet food products while setting out in the open enjoying the sun, or under an umbrella avoiding the sun. Utilizing a heavy barrel very accurate rifle with an extremely high magnification scope for pulling them in close.

I gotta 2 seater fold-up camo chair with attched table and umbrella, interested /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif? KFC is only 5 miles from the house /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif!!!Just kiddin', I've seen the pics, you lay too many out to be fooling around that much. My Predator rifle is my T/C Contender thumbhole 223. It has a good swing, not bad for weight, good off hand stability, good scope for short to mid range day and night hunting with lots of light gathering and heavy duplex reticle, nice trigger. More than likely, one shot is all I'll get at a predator anyways, so why not a single shot. Not the most accurate gun I own or it would be my varmint gun.

Hey Totch94, how long till Mr. Birdsong is done with that Dtech? I'm curious to see how it turns out and what it costs.

$150, and I talked to him today and he said he was about a week out on having it done. I took him 2 more guns today to put in line for the finish. I have gotten one back already and when I'm finished I'll have 8 rifles and 2 or 3 pistols done. Just doing them 1 or 2 at a time as I have a little extra cash. I got some camo furniture from Mike Milli at Dtech to put on the AR when it is done. I had it done in Green T and I think it will look sharp with the camo furniture.

I'll be watching for the pics of the Dtech. I was going to duracoat mine, I think the Green T and camo furniture would be better.

So how would the differance between predator and varment be defined?
Predator is somthing that kills small/young animals like fawns or lambs and calves, or small children or hikers.
Varments take chickens, and pigs or cats and dogs?
Is there any differance, really?

I knew there was a reason I shot so many of those darn varmints. So they don't eat those chicken, pig, cat and dogs. Now when people ask I don't have to explain that ranchers love me because their cows won't break a leg fallen in the darn P-dog holes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
