What is your favorite wildcat cartridge for coyotes?

My all time favorite calling rifle, wildcat or otherwise, is my .17 Predator.

Very first morning in the field.

I think that was the first time that FX-3 ever got used to, if I'm remembering right. That rifle has accounted for over 400 more coyotes since that morning though. A few more recent pics (my partner .243-itized a few of these, LOL!).

My slow twist 6-284 would be my next favorite, but it's a distant second to the .17P.

Good lord! With that many dogs down it looks like they were all shot in self defense! lol. Good shooting DAA and sharp looking rifle! What twist do you run and what bullets?

It's a 9 twist. Ran 30 Golds for most of it's life, but using Nagel 30's since last year.

Thanks for all the posts guys! It's always interesting to hear what everyone runs and sinks their hard earned money into. If you all don't care, when you post your favorite wildcat, can you add what twist rate and bullet you use? Might be interesting to see who prefers the slow twist vs fast. Keep em coming!

They seem to do the trick quite well!

Count me in the slow twist camp. I've worn out fast twist barrels shooting varmints, I do fully understand the advantages. But, for my style of coyote hunting, I'll take a flat midrange trajectory over wind cutting. Wildcats I've built for coyote hunting have all had extreme MPBR as a goal. Along with mild enough recoil to see impacts through the scope in a heavy sporter weight rifle without a brake. Can't get there with heavy for caliber bullets.

My second favorite (a distant second though!), is a 13 twist 6-284 using 55 NBT's. It's a laser and a hammer. Recoil still mild enough that I see most hits in the scope. Hard on fur. Loud. The loud part is my least favorite aspect of it. I've killed a couple of triples with it and my ears were ringing for days afterward both times. Strongly considering losing some velocity to cut it down and suppress it.

A couple pics of it.

You're probably the only person I know that has a slower twist on their 6-284 than I do, mines a 1-12tw and I mostly shoot 75gr Vmax. My friends all make fun of me for having such a slow twist on it and if I ever rebarrel it I'll likely go with a 1-8 or 1-9 but it's served me well with its 1-12tw and those 75 Vmax bullets that go screaming out the end, do realllllly bad things to coyotes. They're, definitely, NOT fur friendly. lol

Hey, I like the wheels on your Jeep. I had the exact same AEV Pintlers on my 09 Rubicon. Sold the Jeep but kept the wheels. Guess I need to find something to put them on.

Very Nice Dave! A master at the art right there.

My favorites right now are a 17 Tac with 30 gr Bergers
A 20-250 with 55gr Bergers
And a 22-243AI with 80 gr Bergers

I have a 17/204 ,but don't have a lot of time with it yet. The most time a field is my 223 AI, slinging 62 gr TSX and 60 gr Vmax. Both kill very well without blowing holes in coyotes and bobcats.

8 Twist

here's my two cents on Wildcats... but what do I know... a year ago I couldn't even spell Willdcat.

In order to get the Maximum benefit of a Custom Caliber... you should shoot the Maximum weight bullet... then... your getting all the Jelly out of that Donut... like BC and Energy.

.17... 30 gr bullets.

.20... 55 gr bullets.

.22... 80-90 gr bullets.

.243/6mm... 105-115 gr bullets.

etc etc

If you don't plan on running a Wildcat at it's Max Potential... then you might as well stay with factory calibers.

But then again... what do South Carolinian's know about Wildcats... we're the Home of the Clemson Tigers and Carolina Gamecocks....LOL.

I disagree on the .22.. 80 - 90 gr bullets. It's more about how much powder you are burning and what you are doing with it.

There are plenty of WC .22 cals

I built my 6mm-250 with a 12 twist barrel to shoot the mid weight bullets. I have taken 74g v-max bullets to just over 3600fps, but settled on 3400fps. I also shoot Sierra 85g HPGK at 3150fps,(a quick load that shot well before deer season). I haven't had an opportunity to bump one into a coyote, but I am looking forward to it.
