What length of shotgun barrel?

I picked up my new shotgun yesterday. I've been looking for the Winchester SXP mentioned above and the cheapest I could find one was 479.99. I walked Into the gun store yesterday and there sits a winchester sxp waterfowl in Mossy Oak Duck Blind camo. It has the 28" barrel and a 3" chamber.

The gun was new never fired but didn't have a box. The best part is they only wanted 299.99. Now no box means it didn't come with the usual 3 chokes but I found a Carlson's modified choke on sale for 17 and a Hevi-Shot Extra full Hevi 13 turkey choke(gotta love the Cabelas bargain cave)for 27 plus the full choke that was in the gun and I was able to get the gun I wanted with my own personal picked chokes for 350 bucks. That's a successful day shopping in my world.

Haven't been this excited for a shotgun in a while. Now to go see how she shoots...

I currently own an o/u with 28" barrel that I use for upland birds and a single shot with 26" barrel that I use for turkeys.

This gun will be either a pump or a semi auto I haven't decided which yet. I also have no experience with anything shorter than 26". Some claim that barrel length has little to do with patterning and velocity and others say it affects it a great deal. The more I research the more confused I become.

Call Howard Montgomery and have him make you a custom barrel for your shotgun. http://www.turkeyshoot.net/GBG.htm
He made me a 36" heavy walled barrel to shoot geese and fast ducks and included a super tight choke just for steel shot. I can plaster a goose at 50 yards with BB every time. You have to see it to believe it.
