What scope power for lightweight AR

Hey guys, got a question for ya. I have a specialized dynamics built upper on a RRA lower, with the a2 style buttstock. The upper is their SBR, 18in lilja, 1-8 twist. It's a great shooting rig, but I have one question. I've had a 6-18 Nikon scope on it but I run into trouble when a coyote or fox busts out from close by me, it's just to hard to find any moving target. My question is, I want to be able to use this AR as a lightweight walking rig, and also a rig for calling/ spot and stalks. What is the best scope/power out there for for this?

Thanks in advance for the help guys

I've been considering a 1-4x. How far can you get a good clear shot on a running yote?
What reticle if your scope?

Thanks

John

Believe if I had them `bustin out` close by me on a regular basis then a holographic might be worth a try.

I have hit prairie dogs at 200 yards with it. The farthest I have hit a coyote is 100 yards. Its also the farthest I have tried. Im sure I could probably hit one at 3oo

I put a Leupold vari v-3 1.5-5x on a recent lightweight build. so far very happy and I see no issue going 300 yards on yotes and should be ok beyond that. also should work great on close, fast moving targets.

What is good?

Best value for the dollar IMO is Eotech. Their 512 model is the original and cheaper choice. Retail is like $465, if you are a club member or something you might spend $390 or so.

If good means cheap, I wouldn't trust anything lesser than say a Vortex SPARC. I have one on an AR and actually one I'm selling that I never opened/used. They are no Eotech, but they do withstand heavy recoil and hold zero. Retail on them is about $200.

Much less than that IMO you are settling for a red dot (or holographic in some cases) that you won't be happy with.

Then again, there are the taurus, hi-point, etc. folks who will disagree. Its all relative to your preferences.

My buddy ran a Holographic for awhile. Much like having a tag in your pocket, they seem to never get close once you set a rifle up for them...

useless for some maybe.

i seem to be able to hit a 10" steel gong at 300 with mine...

I was only judging by my brothers ability to use it. I fired it once and wasn't impressed. That's why I went with a 1-4x. I can still shoot with 2 eyes open and have a little zoom for smaller targets. I also think the crosshairs/dot on the scope is finer than the holographic. I'm sure in the hands of a better marksman the holographic works fine.... I'm just not that marksman.

Thanks for all the help guys. I've got a 1-4 luepold I'm looking at at the moment. It is a heavy duplex reticle, is that going to hinder my ability to shoot 300yds +?
