im getting a stevens .308 and i want to shoot long range, for fun and for hunting,i want to get a scope with windage and elevation adjustments but i dont want to spend too much.any suggestions?

IMHO, THE BEST buy on a scope under $300 is the Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40. Excellent optics, Rainguard HD coating and a lifetime warranty. Shop around to get the best price on them. They can be found for well under $250. I just picked up 2 more of them for my rifles. MI VHNTR

I've had good luck with the Mueller scopes as well..One thing you will want to consider in the higher power scopes is the potential for mirage on hot days at the higher powers.

Generally, once you get over 18x, mirage becomes a factor and precision shooting is more difficult. But the extra magnification is nice when it's not present.

Shooting over Prairie Dog towns where the target are small and the distance can be longer, I've had better luck, as far as mirage is concerned, with my scopes in the 4-16x range, set at 16x..

I have two 8-32x scopes and on a .223, elevation availability is a consideration at 600 yards, I'm not sure what elevation factor is involved in a .308, but you should check your trajectory charts on it prior to buying your scope and insure that the scope can meet the requirements..you may need to get a special riser in order to meet them...

I have a Nikon Buckmaster 4 1/2 x 14 with turrets and paralex adjustment. Around $300 new. This one has that BDC reticule and I don't like it so took it off and now it lives in the closet. It is guarenteed for life reguardless of who owns it. Not a bad scope at all, very good adjustments, very repeatable. Clear glass. Just can't handle the reticule.

Good suggestions by the guys above.
One scope I have a lot of respect for, and in your price range, is the Weaver V-16.
I've owned a total of seven of them over the years(not all at one time), and now own three. The have some advantages other equally priced scopes don't have, like focusing close (10 Meters IIRC), have an A/O focus, are tougher than nails, and have as good a glass as any in the price range.
I began using them 10 years ago for air rifles, as all of the guys shooting air rifles recommended them. They are able to withstand the violent forward recoil of springer arir rifle like the R-1, and the RWS heavy recoiling rifles.
I'ver never had the opportunity to compare them with other similarly priced scopes like the Mueller, so I can't say one scope it better than another. The only thing I can say is I like the V-16, and will always have at least one on a rifle.
I also used the V-16 for rimfire rifles as they are easily adjusted to shoot short ranges.

FInd a scope with alot of MOA adjustment, or get a 20 MOA base. Even a walmart Centerpoint 4-16x40 will have 60 overall MOA, and locking and resettable target turrets. You just need to find out how much drop you need to get you out as far as you wanna shoot. Make sure that your gun can get out as far as you wanna shoot accurately first. Point blank and kentucky windage won't help when you are intentionally trying to reach out.
