WHAT SIZE SCOPE?

Put me in the low-power, big field of view category. Most of my calling is in small fields, clearcuts, brushy areas, etc. In my area, with my hunting style, and in my opinion, the 204 ruger with VERY low power scope is the perfect calling combo. I have been really happy with the "turkey style" reticles for my situation: incredibly fast on target. The very flat shooting 204 doesn't require "how much holdover" guessing and 5x or 6x is plenty for long shots at coyotes. My scope will very seldom get moved above 1.5x or 2x in a calling situation.
This holds true with any of the small, flat-shooting calibers, not just the 204, imo.

I'm wrestling with the very same question at the moment. I just bought a Ruger hawkeye all weather in .223, and have been back and forth over the past week on what scope to put on it. It will be my calling and varmint rifle, used for calling obviously, and the occasional long distance jack or prairie dog. I've been trying to decide between a VXIII 3.5-10x40 or a 4.5-14x40. So far I'm leaning towards the 3.5-10, and I'll be throwing an M1 elevation turret on it as well.

I just put a VX-III 4.5x14x40 on my new .223 last fall and rarely turn it up all the way. I just bought a TC Encore with a .204 barrel so I am to trying to decide what to put on it. I am leaning towards a 3x9x50 to gather the light.
