Hey fellow hunters,
Bear season starts next week for me, and I was going to try out a little bit of calling. I was wondering what kind of sounds a bear (Eastern Black Bear in my case) would respond to? Any help from you all would be greatly appreciated!

I don't call in the east, but I do call black bears. If you can use e-callers, Foxpro has some calls for bears.

For hand calls, my very best favorite call is an antler call made by our very own Brad H.
Does a fawn distress that calls bears, deer, and moose. A bear cub distress also works. I've called them with with different distress calls.

I find lots of volume and non stop calling works. You should have some one watching your back door at all times, otherwise it gets western real fast.

Our good friend redfrog has you headed in the right direction.Loud non stop distress cries really seem to do the trick.

I've used The Carlton bear call, its pretty loud and its called in bears for me.I've also used a javalina call, even though you don't have javalina's back there its still a distress call.Or like redfrog said use a fawn distress call. The main thing is call long and loud and watch your back.Good luck and let us know how you do.take care, daveyboy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif P.s.One more thing I noticed is when I spotted bears coming in and stopped calling they either quit coming in or slowed way down coming in.And when I started up calling again here they come.Wayne Carlton's bear calling video is pretty informative about calling bears.

Thanks for the information guys. Its doesnt leave me much to look forward to unfortunately. It is illegal to use bait or electronic calls for bears here, so I guess I am going to have to get a hunting buddy to help me call. It would be a disaster to hyper-ventilate while trying to use a mouth call for 45 minutes. Heck, I might even get two hunting buddies! Bear season is next week, so I will let you guys know how it went!
