I am a new coyote hunter and just purchased a foxpro spitfire. I have only hunted later and early morning hours on a full moon. I haven't bagged my first yote yell but from what I read be patient, watch the wind and move slowly. My question is what sounds should I start my set out with later in afternoon? Is it the same sounds you would use at the full moon later on? Also should you start out with volume level at a 3 and then after a few minutes crank it up to a 5. I think I was calling to loudly. Just go out and use the coyote pup#2 sound.play it loud on that spitfire! If there is 1 around it will come running so be ready and use your shotgun.This should help you to get your first

I was taught to use the plain rabbit call first, then next time use a different call,maybe deer, along with different calling location each time. Then after that use a couple coyote barks mixed in with the rabbit or deer or bird sound, or something to make it a different sound. Then you can use female coyote call, or male howl. Then you can go to a challenge howl. As last resort, when they are not coming in, you can use the howl recording of the whole group. This could make a cautious one come in thinking a whole pack is moving in to its area.
One of the main things is to not let them come in down wind where you can't see them. If they do you probably won't see them, and will teach them that you are lying to them. This is an interpetation of what I learned from the late Bill Austin's instruction tapes, that I bought 14 yrs ago. Bill sure seemed to know his coyotes. He was supposed to have killed 10,000 coyotes in his 30yr career. He was supposed to be the first coyote call maker, first one to call in a coyote with a homemade call, 1967.

I agree with bobcat on this. I made my first stand with my new spitfire 2 weeks ago. I started with a locate howl then went to pup distress. I had one in in the first 10 min. It is hard this time of year to get anything with rabbit distress (atleast for me) others guys might be having luck with them, but I haven't. You do need to play the spitfire loud if in the open, on 5 it isn't that loud. Just get out and have fun, learn from your mistakes, and lots of patience. Good luck
