what turkey call to get?

the last couple of days, the turkeys have been very vocal at my place.
yesterday we were listening to a turkey conversation on either side of our front yard, and after about 3 - 4 minutes a female came running out of the woods on the left side, ran about 3/4 across the front yard, stopped and called again, got a reply and went running in the direction of the other one calling.

I'm thinking that this is probably a good time to learn to call them.
can anyone recommend a good turkey call for me to get?

Despite my personal issue with Knight&Hale the Sla-Tek pocket puppy is very easy to use and a great call. Get a spare rosewood & graphite striker and your bases are covered for slate.

I too can recommend lightsout. He makes awesome calls. Sheese, we have another turkey call maker here that makes good ones too. I bought one for my son and almost didn't give it to him I liked it so much. For some reason (age?) I can't think of his name right now. If I think of it I'll be back and post it.

There's more to talking turkey than making sounds. They have a language and use different vocalizations for different things and with different meanings. If you want to have a lot of fun at this time of the year learn the Kee Kee Run and the Assembly Yelp. I think the easiest calls to use for a beginner are the pot/peg type and a good box call. For my pot/peg calls I like crystal over slate with a variety of pegs. An inexpensive box that sounds right is the Lynch Raspy Old Hen. Diaphrams are very versatile and work extremely well once you get the hang of them. MY custom turkey calls are from Dad's Custom Turkey Calls. The National Wild Turkey Federation has a website with a forum all about turkey talk, calls, guns, ect. Midwest Turkey Call Supply is an outstanding place to find what you need when it comes to turkey hunting.

thanks for all the info guys, I'll check out some of the calls at bass pro and here at the custom call makers.

Since they walk past my front porch several time a day, I wanted to have some fun with them using different calls.

'course i don't want to scare them off before the fall hunting season shows up. Nothing like being lazy and having them get used to you on the front porch drinking coffee, holding a gun.

I believe that the only way for a beginner to go is with a box call and a good instructional video or audio. Box calls are nearly fool proof, very easy to use, have lots of volume when you need it or can be gently worked for timid toms. I've had very good luch with the inexpensive Loman box call and a M.A.D. Hammer. I also carry a Knight&Hale push button call that has been very good for bringing toms in closer. These are not expensive calls and they get the turkeys year after year.
