What type of wood?

Does anyone know what type of wood this is? A guy I work with gave it to me and he didn't know. He said it was from Brazil? It is very heavy and very hard. The second pic is one I turned with it. The top is poplar. I really don't like to use poplar but it is cheap and all I had. Plus, I am giving this call to the guy who gave me the block and I know he'll never use it but I think I should since he gave it to me. Anyway, if anyone might know what type of wood it is I would love to know. Sorry the pics aren't that good, I'm still trying to figure out the camara. Thanks guys.

It is not Bubinga if it is from Brazil, Bubinga is from Africa, try Jatoba from Brazil which is known as Brazilian Cherry but is not really a Cherry wood.

jatoba isnt that red. is it bloodwood? padauk isnt that heavy, and its really not THAT hard, and if its from brazil it verywell could be bloodwood?

Marvin, you got me. I was looking at my wood/common name chart and still typed the wrong word. LOL!!

I've got a stick of Brazian Cherry right in front of me, and it looks just like the wood in the picture. But without seeing it in person it's still just a guess.

Later guys,

Rudy

Jatoba can be that red, it has a wide range of colors in the red, and with the tint of brown it looks like some that I have seen. If it is real hard and easy to turn my money is on Jatoba.

Rudy check your emails!

thanks for all the help guys. It was not easy to turn dogcatcher. It took forever to even get it round and had to sharpen my chisel every 5 mins it felt like. You cant really see this in the pic but on the ends, and it came out in the call, are spots. Looks like someone took a pencil and just made little dots all over it with the tip. The dots are a little lighter in color than the rest.

ok guys, I asked the guy who gave me the block of wood if it was Brazilian Cherry. He perked up and said, "ya, thats it!" But, just 5 minutes before that he said "no hablo ingles", so you make the call.

Is the guy from Brazil? Because if he is, I doubt if they call it Brazilian Cherry in Brazil so that means it is probably something else, unless he has been here so long that he is that Americanized. Ask him if it is Jatoba, the Brazilian name.
